Shemini Atzeres as internalized rest
Shemini Atzeres · sukkah · lulav · yetzer hara · Clouds of Glory
"On the eighth day there shall be a solemn assembly (atzeres) for you" (Bamidbar 29:35).
The Sefas Emes opens with the pasuk for Shemini Atzeres, the day that follows the seven days of Sukkos.
It is the purpose and culmination of all the days of the festival.
Shemini Atzeres is the goal toward which all seven days of Sukkos have been leading.
Just as it is taught regarding the seventh day of Pesach: "Six days you shall eat matzos, and on the seventh day there shall be an atzeres" (Devarim 16:8).
Pesach has a parallel structure: six days followed by a concluding atzeres on the seventh, which the Sefas Emes will compare to Sukkos and its eighth day.
And the explanation is that during the days of Pesach, after Yetzias Mitzrayim, there were still quarrels and battles — for "matzah" is a term of strife (matzah/matzus).
Immediately after leaving Mitzrayim the people were not yet at peace; the very word "matzah" echoes "matzus" (quarrel), hinting at unresolved conflict.
Until the seventh day, when Krias Yam Suf (the splitting of the sea) occurred, and there was complete geulah (redemption): "then Moshe sang" (az yashir) (Shemos 15:1).
Only on the seventh day, at the sea, was the redemption complete and the strife resolved — culminating in the Shirah.
So too, after Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, when we are redeemed from the yetzer hara, it still pursues us.
Even after the cleansing of the Yamim Noraim, the yetzer hara has not been finally vanquished — like Pharaoh's army chasing after the freed Jews.
And this is the hint of the sukkah and the lulav, as the reason is stated, "for I caused Bnei Yisrael to dwell in sukkos" (Vayikra 23:43).
The sukkah and lulav of the still-incomplete stage correspond to that interim period of ongoing struggle, paralleling the protection Hashem gave in the wilderness.
And as it is written there, "and God did not lead them by way of the land [of the Philistines]..." (Shemos 13:17) — for they would still have needed to wage war.
Hashem deliberately routed Yisrael around the direct path, because they were not yet ready to face the wars that awaited.
This is the meaning of "and Bnei Yisrael went up armed (chamushim)" — armed for war — "and God led them around (vayasev)" (Shemos 13:18) — that He surrounded them with the Clouds of Glory (ananei kavod) and raised them above nature, so that they would not turn back upon seeing war.
Hashem protected the not-yet-ready nation by enveloping them in the Clouds of Glory and lifting them above the natural order, sparing them the sight of battle that might have made them retreat — this is the deeper meaning of the sukkah as the Clouds of Glory.
So too, the lulav is "a weapon of war" (manei kerava) and the sukkah is protection.
The lulav, taken like a sword of victory, represents the weapon of the ongoing battle, while the sukkah represents the protective covering of the Clouds of Glory.
And on the eighth day is the aspect of rest (menuchah).
Shemini Atzeres is the stage of completed peace and rest, after the battle of the seven days is over.
And that which was accomplished beforehand by means of the sukkah and lulav is accomplished on Shemini Atzeres within the very essence of Bnei Yisrael themselves.
What the external mitzvos of sukkah and lulav achieved as protective "weapons" during the struggle becomes, on Shemini Atzeres, an internalized reality woven into the very being of Yisrael — no longer needing the outer tools, the victory and closeness are now intrinsic.
Summary: Shemini Atzeres is the culmination of Sukkos, paralleling the seventh day of Pesach. Just as after Yetzias Mitzrayim there was still strife until the complete redemption at Krias Yam Suf, so after the Yamim Noraim the yetzer hara still pursues us. The sukkah (the protecting Clouds of Glory that raised Yisrael above nature) and the lulav (a weapon of war) belong to this interim stage of struggle. On the eighth day, the aspect of rest, what those external mitzvos accomplished becomes internalized within the very essence of Bnei Yisrael themselves.
