Lowliness and the seed of truth

On Hoshana Rabbah the Chazal instituted the mitzvah of the aravah (willow).

The Sefas Emes opens by noting that the willow is given its own special avodah on the final day of Sukkos, even though it is the lowliest of the four species.

For it alludes to those lowly ones who have in them neither taste nor smell.

The aravah has no taste and no fragrance, hinting at the simple Yidden who seem to lack both Torah (taste) and good deeds (smell).

And this is truly testimony to the praise of Bnei Yisrael.

Far from being a deficiency, the inclusion of these lowly ones is itself the greatest praise of Klal Yisrael.

For Hashem's choosing of us is not on account of our deeds, but rather as it is written: "And I planted you as a noble vine, entirely seed of truth" (Yirmiyahu 2:21).

Hashem's selection of Bnei Yisrael flows not from our accomplishments but from the truth-seed He planted in us — an essence that belongs to every Yid regardless of his level.

Therefore the word aravah has the same gematria (numerical value) as zera (seed) — and even the lowly ones, when they are close to the truth and know that there is nothing in them…

The Sefas Emes points to the numerical equivalence of aravah and zera to show that the simplest Yid shares in this "seed of truth," precisely when he humbly recognizes his own emptiness.

…they too have a portion within the general "seed of truth."

This honest self-knowledge is itself their attachment to the holy essence; their lowliness, joined to truth, secures their share in Klal Yisrael.

"Anochi" (I) refers to the Torah, which is called emes (truth), and through the power of the Torah every member of Bnei Yisrael has a grasp on the attribute of truth.

The "I" of "I planted you" is the Torah itself, called truth; by being bound to the Torah, every Yid takes hold of the middah of emes.

"Entirely seed of truth" alludes also to the lowly ones, as was said in the name of the Rebbe of Lublin z"l: that one who knows that he is nothing…

Citing the Chozeh of Lublin, the Sefas Emes teaches that the verse's word "entirely" deliberately includes even the lowest — for genuine self-nullification is the key.

…has a grasp on Hashem by virtue of his recognition of the truth.

The one who truly knows his own nothingness is, by that very honesty (bittul), bound to Hashem — for he is standing in emes.

And it is written: "And to one who orders his way" (Tehillim 50:23) — the Chazal explained: one who weighs his ways, to honestly recognize his true situation, merits the salvation of Hashem.

Chazal read "v'sam derech" (one who sets his path) as one who honestly assesses where he really stands; such a person merits yeshuas Elokim, the salvation of Hashem.

And this is the praise of the aravah, which withers before all the other species — and through it we merit salvation.

The willow wilts first of the four species, yet it is precisely this image of humble lowliness that brings the yeshuah of Hoshana Rabbah.

Summary: The aravah, with neither taste nor smell, represents the simplest Yidden — yet their very recognition of their own nothingness is their deepest grasp on Hashem and the "seed of truth" planted in all of Bnei Yisrael, and through this honest bittul they merit the salvation of Hoshana Rabbah.
