Becoming One Bundle Through Ancestors
“In the Midrash: ‘You shall take a bundle of hyssop’—I make you a bundle unto Myself, even though you are lowly like hyssop, in the merit of the Patriarchs…”
The Sefat Emet begins by explaining that God binds Israel together as one unit through the merit of the ancestors, even when Israel appears spiritually diminished.
For this was the essence of the redemption: that they be drawn after the deeds of the Patriarchs.
Redemption means reconnecting to the spiritual path forged by the forefathers.
For truly, children are drawn after the deeds of their fathers.
Spiritual inheritance naturally flows from one generation to the next.
But they became mixed among the nations.
Exile had disrupted their attachment to their ancestral roots.
Therefore their cleaving to the root was separated.
The connection to the Patriarchs weakened due to assimilation.
And this was the redemption: to become one bundle and be separated from the mixture.
Redemption restored unity and distinction from foreign influences.
Therefore, ‘You shall touch the lintel and the doorposts,’ as stated elsewhere, corresponds to the teaching: A person must say, “When will my deeds reach those of my fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob?”
The blood on the doorposts symbolizes aspiring to emulate the acts of the Patriarchs.
And behold, they merited this at the Exodus, not gradually.
In Egypt this reconnection occurred suddenly, through divine intervention.
And thus it is written “leaping upon the mountains” — in the merit of the Patriarchs, for the Holy One lifted them up to cling to the deeds of the Patriarchs.
God “leaps” by raising Israel spiritually to the level of the forefathers.
And one should not wonder at this, for even more is written: “I brought you to Myself.”
God’s drawing Israel close goes beyond even the merit of the ancestors.
And in a brief moment they were gathered from [the labor of] mortar and bricks.
The shift from servitude to divine closeness occurred instantaneously.
“I carried you on eagles’ wings” refers to the deeds of the Patriarchs, and through this: “I brought you to Myself.”
The Patriarchs’ merit served as the vehicle lifting Israel toward God.
And we have already written in the portion of Shemot that the essence of the Exodus was the clarification of the covenant of Abraham our forefather.
The redemption revealed and restored the Abrahamic covenant.
And so it is written in the Zohar here: “And He passed over the doorway”—this refers to circumcision, the doorway of the body, as it is written: “He sat at the entrance of the tent.”
The Zohar links the Pesach doorway to the covenantal “entrance” created through circumcision.
And it says there in the Midrash: “A great opening You opened.”
Circumcision creates a spiritual gateway toward God.
For this gateway to God was revealed through the power of the sign of the holy covenant.
The covenant is the force that reveals access to divine connection.
But for Israel to be drawn after the covenant,
To align themselves with the covenant,
for this they needed to descend into Egypt and clarify their deeds.
The exile served to purify and refine Israel’s commitment.
And what the Holy One said to Abraham: “You shall surely know that your offspring will be strangers…”
The decree of exile was part of establishing connection to Abraham’s path.
This means that through this they would merit being drawn after his deeds, as it says: “So shall your seed be”—that your descendants will be like you.
Exile enables Israel to become true inheritors of Abraham’s spiritual stature.
As stated in the Midrash on Devarim.
The Sefat Emet cites Midrashic support for this interpretation.
Summary: The Sefat Emet explains that the Exodus restored Israel’s bond with the Patriarchs, forming them into a single spiritual “bundle.” Through the covenant of Abraham, symbolized by the Pesach doorway and circumcision, Israel was lifted suddenly to the spiritual level of their forefathers. Exile served to refine them so that they could truly inherit and embody the deeds of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
