Guarding the imprint of Shabbos in the heart

אך את שבתותי תשמורו כי אות הוא ביני וביניכם כו'.

"However, My Shabbosos you shall keep, for it is a sign between Me and you..." (Shemos 31:13).

The Sefas Emes opens with the pasuk commanding the keeping of Shabbos, which Hashem calls a "sign" between Himself and Bnei Yisrael.

התחיל שבתותי ומסיים אות הוא.

It begins with "My Shabbosos" (plural) and concludes with "it is a sign" (singular).

He notes a grammatical shift: the verse opens in the plural, "My Shabbosos," yet ends in the singular, "it is a sign."

אבל ביאור הדברים את שבתותי דייקא.

But the explanation of the matter is: "My Shabbosos" — precisely so.

The plural "My Shabbosos" is deliberate and meaningful, and the resolution lies in understanding why.

כי איך שייך שבני ישראל ישמרו השבת הלא גדלה מעלת השבת קודש ממעלת בני ישראל.

For how is it fitting that Bnei Yisrael should "keep" (guard) the Shabbos? Surely the greatness of Shabbos Kodesh is higher than the greatness of Bnei Yisrael.

He raises a difficulty: the language of "guarding" implies protecting something lesser, yet Shabbos is on a higher spiritual plane than Bnei Yisrael themselves — so how can they be the ones to "guard" it?

ומי גדול השומר או הנשמר.

And which is greater — the guardian or the one being guarded?

Normally the guardian is in service of, and thus subordinate to, that which he guards — sharpening the question.

אך התפשטות קדושת שבת שיש בכל איש ישראל כי נשאר רשימה בלב איש ישראל המקיים השבת.

But it refers to the expansion of the holiness of Shabbos that is within every Jew, for an impression remains in the heart of the Jew who keeps the Shabbos.

The resolution: what Bnei Yisrael "guard" is not the day of Shabbos itself, but the spreading-forth of Shabbos's holiness into each Jew — the "impression" (reshimah) that Shabbos leaves imprinted in his heart.

וזאת רשימת השבת הנשאר בלב צריך שמירה וודאי.

And this impression of Shabbos that remains in the heart certainly requires guarding.

This residual imprint of Shabbos within the heart is something a person can preserve or damage — and that is precisely what needs guarding.

וזאת הרשימה היא אות ביני וביניכם.

And this impression is the "sign between Me and you."

This inner imprint left by Shabbos is itself the "sign" — the private bond between Hashem and Bnei Yisrael.

כי האומות אף אם יעברו וישמרו השבת לא ירגישו מאומה בנפשותם.

For the nations, even if they were to transgress and observe the Shabbos, would feel nothing at all in their souls.

The nations of the world, even if they kept Shabbos, would experience no inner spiritual impression from it — they lack the soul-capacity to absorb its holiness.

ובני ישראל הנוחלין נשמה יתירה בשבת לכן צריכין לשמור שלא יפגמו במעשיהם הארת השבת כנ"ל:

But Bnei Yisrael, who inherit an extra soul (neshamah yeseirah) on Shabbos, therefore need to guard that they do not blemish the illumination of Shabbos through their deeds, as above.

Because Bnei Yisrael receive a neshamah yeseirah on Shabbos, the holiness genuinely registers within them — and so they must guard their conduct, even after Shabbos, so as not to damage that lingering illumination of Shabbos imprinted on the soul.

Summary: The Torah says Bnei Yisrael must "guard" Shabbos, yet Shabbos is greater than they are — so how can they be its guardians? The Sefas Emes answers that what they guard is not the day itself but the "impression" of Shabbos's holiness that remains in the Jewish heart. This imprint, unique to Bnei Yisrael who receive a neshamah yeseirah, is the "sign between Me and you," and it must be protected from being blemished by one's deeds.
