Torah as complete protection and self-sufficiency
Torah as protection · every letter · Sinai's unceasing voice · emunah · bechirah
In the Zohar HaKadosh on the verse "And in all that I have said to you shall you be careful, and the name of other gods you shall not mention…" (Shemos 23:13).
The Sefas Emes opens from the Zohar's treatment of this verse, pairing the call to "be careful in all I have said" with the warning against turning to foreign powers.
For the words of Torah are a protection for a person.
Torah itself is a shmirah (safeguard) — the words of Torah surround and guard the one who holds to them.
And Hashem gave us Torah and mitzvos through which we can find everything we need, so that we need not seek counsel from any other place for anything at all.
The Torah is wholly self-sufficient: it contains the answer to every need, so a Jew never has to look outside it — to any "other power" — for guidance in any matter.
And it is written "in all that I have said" — meaning that in every utterance and every letter of the Torah this protection is to be found.
"In all that I have said" is read literally: every single word and even every letter of the Torah carries within it this guarding power.
And so I heard from the holy mouth of my grandfather and teacher, of blessed memory, on the verse "a great voice that did not cease" (Devarim 5:19), which the Targum renders "and did not stop," and he said: in every letter of the Torah every person can find all that he needs at every time, for it has no cessation. End of his words.
He cites his grandfather (the Chiddushei HaRim): the "great voice that did not cease" means the revelation at Sinai never stopped — its voice still speaks. Therefore in every letter of Torah every person, in every generation and moment, can find exactly what he needs, for that voice is unceasing.
And this is the matter of the wholeness that exists in every single point of Torah and mitzvos — everything is contained in it. Even so, it is written in the language of a command, for this protection depends upon the person, according to how much he knows this and strengthens himself in the words of Torah, knowing that he has no other place for anything he needs but the Torah — as the saying goes, "Turn it over… for everything is in it" (Avos 5:22).
Every "point" of Torah contains the whole — yet the verse is phrased as a command ("you shall be careful") because realizing this protection depends on the person. The more deeply one knows and trusts that everything he needs is in the Torah and nowhere else, the more that completeness is unlocked for him.
According to this knowledge of his, so is everything revealed to him, and the effect of the Torah is realized — for everything depends on the bechirah (free choice) of the person, as above.
The Torah's protective power is actualized in exact proportion to a person's emunah and recognition of it; because it hinges on his free choice to immerse himself in Torah and trust it completely, the revelation of "everything is in it" is, in the end, in his own hands.
Summary: The words of Torah are a complete protection for a person — Hashem gave us a Torah in which everything we could ever need is contained, in every word and every letter, so that we need never look to any "other power" for guidance. As the Chiddushei HaRim taught, the "voice that did not cease" still speaks in every letter for every person at every time. Yet this is framed as a command, because the safeguard is unlocked only in proportion to one's own knowledge, trust, and free choice to find everything within the Torah.
