Purim's salvation from above knowledge
Purim · Keser · Above Da'as · Essential Bond · Moados
It is brought in the Midrash: all the festivals (moados) are destined to be nullified, except for the days of Purim.
The Midrash teaches that in the future all the Yamim Tovim will be annulled, but Purim alone will endure — the Sefas Emes will explain why.
And some say also Yom HaKippurim [will endure].
According to one view, Yom Kippur too will not be nullified, for it shares Purim's unique quality.
To explain the matter: it is brought that the removal of the ring [by Achashverosh] was greater than the forty-eight prophets who arose for Bnei Yisrael, etc.
Chazal say the threat of Haman's decree, signaled by the king's ring, did more to bring Yisrael to teshuvah than all forty-eight nevi'im — pointing to a power beyond ordinary prophecy.
And so it is brought: all of them (the prophets) neither subtracted nor added to what is written in the Torah, except for the reading of the Megillah.
The nevi'im introduced nothing new beyond the Torah — the one exception being the mitzvah of reading the Megillah on Purim.
And what is "they did not subtract"?
The Sefas Emes presses on the wording: the statement implies that with Megillah there was also a dimension of "not subtracting."
For it implies that this too applied to the reading of the Megillah.
The phrase hints that Megillah involved a "non-subtraction" — a removal that was nonetheless not truly a loss.
But it is as it is said, "that is not according to the law (asher lo k'das)" (Esther 4:16).
Esther's act of approaching the king "not according to the law" hints at a salvation that operates beyond the normal order of the law.
For, Heaven forbid, according to the Torah they were liable to destruction, for the decree had been issued above as well.
By the strict measure of Torah law, Yisrael's sins had earned annihilation, and the decree was sealed even in Heaven.
And this is the meaning of "the removal of the ring."
The ring being handed over represents this heavenly decree — the stripping away of Yisrael's protective order.
That all the order and form was taken from Bnei Yisrael on account of the sins.
Their sins had stripped away the whole structured order through which Hashem normally relates to them.
Nevertheless, Bnei Yisrael have an essential deveikus (attachment) to the Holy One.
Even with all the outer order removed, an inner, essential bond between Yisrael and Hashem remains untouched.
As it is written, "Hashem's portion is His people" (Devarim 32:9).
Bnei Yisrael are Hashem's very portion — a connection rooted in His essence, not contingent on their deeds.
And this salvation was above the order and governance of the Torah.
The Purim deliverance came from a level higher than the lawful order — drawn from that essential, unconditional bond.
And so it is brought also regarding Yom Kippur: "If your sins be like scarlet (kashanim)" (Yeshayahu 1:18).
The Sefas Emes connects Yom Kippur to the same theme through a wordplay on "kashanim," read as "like the years."
Chazal explained: even if [the sins] are arrayed and come like these "years" (shanim), which are ordered from the six days of creation, "they shall become white as snow."
Even sins that are as fixed and ingrained as the order of the years built into creation itself can be whitened on Yom Kippur.
Even if they ruined the entire order arranged for them.
Yom Kippur can repair even sins that have wrecked the whole structured order of one's life.
And this comes from the supernal whiteness (loven ha'elyon) that pardons the sins of His people.
The forgiveness flows from a level above all order — the "supernal whiteness," the source beyond the law that wipes sins clean.
And it is brought in the Zohar HaKadosh that these forty-eight prophets draw from the forty-eight drops that descend from Gan Eden — see there in Parshas Chayei Sarah.
The forty-eight nevi'im are nourished by forty-eight drops flowing from Gan Eden, a measured channel of supernal influence.
And this is the drawing down of the fifty gates of binah (understanding).
These drops relate to the fifty gates of binah — the channels of comprehension that flow into the world.
For Moshe Rabbeinu is above all the forty-eight.
Moshe attained a rung higher than the forty-eight prophets, reaching toward the fiftieth gate.
As it is written, "And You made him [lacking] a little less than the angels/God" (Tehillim 8:6).
Moshe fell only "a little" short of the highest level — the fiftieth gate — which is alluded to as nearly Divine.
And da'as (knowledge) comes from the brain (moach).
Conscious knowledge and understanding flow from the moach, the seat of comprehension.
And these are the aspect of the forty-eight prophets.
The forty-eight prophets correspond to da'as that issues from the moach — graspable, ordered knowledge (note: moach has the gematria of 48).
But that which is above the brain cannot be grasped, for it is above da'as and binah.
There is a level higher than the mind itself, which lies beyond all knowledge and understanding and cannot be apprehended.
Therefore it is called keser (crown), for this is a testimony about the King that one cannot grasp it.
This supra-rational level is the "crown" — like a crown that rests above the head, it testifies to a Divine reality beyond all comprehension.
Therefore in the aspect of the brain there is the apprehension of da'as.
Within the mind, knowledge can indeed be attained and understood.
But the skull (gulgoles) encompasses, above the brain.
The skull surrounds the brain from above and without — corresponding to keser, which encompasses the mind rather than entering it.
And there is no apprehension, image, or imagination there.
At this encompassing level there is no grasp, no mental picture, no conception at all — it is wholly beyond the mind.
And from there came the salvation in the days of Mordechai and Esther.
The Purim deliverance was drawn specifically from this supra-rational, encompassing level of keser.
Even though all the gates were locked.
Although every accessible gate of mercy and order had been shut by the decree, the salvation still came — from beyond all gates.
Therefore Haman made a gallows (tree) fifty amos high.
Haman reached for the fiftieth level itself — the gallows fifty amos high — grasping at the very gate beyond the forty-eight that he could not legitimately attain.
And all the festivals are a testimony about the Exodus from Mitzrayim, that the Holy One took us out before we sank into the fiftieth gate of the gates of impurity.
The Yamim Tovim all commemorate the Exodus, when Hashem rescued Yisrael just before they would have descended into the fiftieth and final gate of tumah.
And we merited afterward to enter the gates of purity.
Having been saved from the depths of impurity, Yisrael then ascended into the gates of taharah.
And to receive the Torah on the fiftieth day of the Omer.
The count culminates in Matan Torah on the fiftieth day — corresponding to the fiftieth gate of binah on the side of holiness.
For this is the essence of the festivals.
The whole purpose of the moadim is bound up in this ascent from Mitzrayim to receiving the Torah at the fiftieth gate.
And they are the aspect of da'as, on account of which they are called "the appointed times of Hashem" (moadei Hashem).
The festivals belong to the realm of da'as — graspable, ordered Divine knowledge — which is why they are "fixed times," set within the comprehensible order.
And in the future Bnei Yisrael will have a bond above da'as.
In time to come Yisrael will attain an attachment to Hashem that transcends knowledge entirely — the level of keser.
This is the meaning of "all the festivals are nullified."
Since the moadim belong to the realm of da'as, they will be "nullified" when Yisrael rise to the bond that is above da'as.
But Purim, whose salvation was from this aspect that is above da'as, will not be nullified.
Because Purim already draws from the supra-rational level of keser, it belongs to the future world and will never be annulled.
And this is truly a testimony that "Hashem's portion is His people."
Purim testifies to the essential, unconditional bond between Hashem and Yisrael, which lies above all order and knowledge.
Therefore, even when they have no deeds at all, the King desires them.
Because the bond is essential and not based on merit, Hashem desires Yisrael even when they have no good deeds to show.
As it is written, "whom the king desires to honor" (Esther 6:6).
The Megillah's language of the king's desire hints at Hashem's pure, reasonless desire for His people.
And no reason was given, only that it is the desire of the King.
There is no stated cause for this favor — it rests on nothing but Hashem's own will, above all reason.
As it is written, "If Hashem desires us" (Bamidbar 14:8).
Hashem's relationship to Yisrael flows from His sheer desire (chefetz), beyond any reason or merit.
Therefore one is obligated to become joyously intoxicated on Purim "until he does not know" (ad d'lo yada), as above.
The mitzvah of ad d'lo yada — reaching a state beyond knowing — corresponds precisely to Purim's source above da'as, the level of keser where the mind cannot reach.
Summary: All the festivals are rooted in da'as — graspable, ordered Divine knowledge tied to the Exodus and the fiftieth gate of binah at Matan Torah — and so in the future, when Yisrael attain a bond above da'as, they will be "nullified." Purim is different: when the king's ring was removed, all of Yisrael's protective order was stripped away by a decree sealed even on high, yet their essential, unconditional bond to Hashem ("Hashem's portion is His people") remained. The salvation was drawn from the level of keser, the encompassing "skull" above the brain, beyond all knowledge and reason. That is why Haman built a gallows fifty amos high, why no reason is given for the King's desire, and why we drink "until we do not know" — Purim, like Yom Kippur's supernal whiteness, springs from the place above da'as and will never be annulled.
