Personal Mitzrayim Through Arrogance
“And I will bring out, and I will rescue, and I will take, etc.”
These are the stages of redemption, each expressing a deeper drawing‑out of Israel from bondage.
“And you shall know that I am the Lord Who brings out, etc.”
The purpose of redemption is the recognition that God Himself is the One Who brings Israel forth.
We see that the entire aim of the Exodus was to know that the Holy One took us out; therefore we must constantly remember the Exodus from Egypt.
The Sefat Emet explains that remembrance is the key to internalizing Divine redemption.
The truth is that at all times every Jew has his own “Egypt.”
Each person encounters spiritual constriction which parallels the ancient bondage.
Therefore we recall the Exodus every day.
Daily memory is needed because daily constriction must be overcome.
And in proportion to how much we know and remember that God brought us out…
Awareness of Divine deliverance shapes one’s ability to transcend constriction.
…one does not need actually to enter the narrow straits.
If a person maintains humility and remembrance, suffering need not be imposed.
For when a person forgets and grows proud, saying “my power and the strength of my hand,” etc…
Forgetfulness leads to arrogance, which in turn invites constriction.
…then he must be brought into the straits.
Difficulty becomes a corrective to restore humility and awareness of God.
So that he may see that everything is from God.
The goal of hardship is renewed recognition of the Divine source of all.
The Exodus was a preparation for all generations, as the Gemara says: “the One Who brings out” includes the future.
The original redemption planted the root of all future deliverances.
And from the outset it implies this, etc.
The very language of the verse hints to ongoing redemption.
This means that the Exodus was for all generations.
Its spiritual force remains active beyond its historical moment.
And according to the measure that a person remembers the Exodus…
The individual’s remembrance determines the intensity of renewed redemption.
…so the Exodus is awakened within him at all times.
Each recollection reactivates the liberating Divine energy.
The essence of the Egyptian exile is that a person’s intellect and understanding do not properly extend into all his actions, as the books explain.
Exile is intellectual constriction: knowledge fails to shape behavior.
And God commanded that this be told to the Israelites in Egypt, for they were crying out from harsh physical labor.
They needed to understand the inner meaning of their suffering, not only its external burden.
And afterward, when they heard from Moses that after the redemption the Divine Name would rest upon them…
The promise of spiritual elevation reframed their experience of exile.
“And I will take you… and I will be your God.”
Redemption culminates in a relationship of closeness and Divine kingship.
And this pain grew within them—that through the bondage of Egypt they could not draw near to God to accept His kingship.
The deepest suffering was spiritual distance, not physical labor.
And they worried over this.
Their yearning for closeness to God intensified.
And this itself was a preparation for redemption.
Yearning for God creates the vessel for deliverance.
And this teaches us as well: we should long for redemption so that we may be servants of God upon whom His Name rests.
Our desire for redemption must be rooted in the desire for Divine service.
Through this we will merit redemption speedily in our days, amen.
Redemption is attained through sincere yearning for closeness to God.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that the Exodus is a perpetual spiritual reality awakened by remembrance. Arrogance and forgetfulness create constriction; humility and awareness open the path to redemption. The essence of exile is blocked understanding, while true redemption comes when we yearn to serve God and receive His kingship.
