Unbroken Chain of Forefathers

Vaeira · תרל"ז (1876) · Essay 4

“A cord on the level of ‘Knowledge,’ and it is not found.”

The Sefat Emet refers to a spiritual bond—rooted in the divine attribute of da‘at—that ideally connects generations, but here is described as missing or disrupted.

For the will of God was that the Children of Israel should take the place of the Patriarchs.

God intended that Israel, as descendants, would continue and embody the spiritual stature and mission of the forefathers.

And if they had fully followed after the deeds of the Patriarchs…

If Israel had maintained complete continuity with the ways of the Patriarchs…

Meaning: in a level adjacent to them, like a son following his father.

This would require them to be spiritually close enough to serve as true heirs to the Patriarchs’ achievements.

Then the deeds of the Patriarchs would have joined to them.

Their forefathers’ merits would have combined with their own, forming a single spiritual continuum.

And it would have been as though the Patriarchs themselves were still present.

Spiritually, the ancestors would be considered “alive,” their influence fully manifest through their descendants.

But since they were unable to draw (after them)…

Israel could not maintain that spiritual continuity or fully inherit their forefathers’ level.

The connection was severed.

The generational spiritual chain from the Patriarchs to Israel became broken.

And this is the meaning of “and it is not found.”

The missing cord refers to the lost bond between the generations.

Therefore the redemption came with difficulty.

Because the continuity was broken, the process of redemption required hardship to rebuild the connection.

Summary: The Sefat Emet explains that Israel was meant to continue the spiritual legacy of the Patriarchs. Had they remained close to their ancestors’ ways, the merits of the forefathers would have merged seamlessly with their own. But since they could not sustain this connection, the bond was broken, and therefore the redemption had to come through struggle and difficulty.
