Finding Godliness Through Torah
“In the verse ‘And I appeared…,’ and in the Midrash: ‘Woe for those who are lost.’”
The Sefat Emet opens by citing the Midrash, which laments the loss of the patriarchs.
“This is difficult, for Moses attained a level higher than theirs, as it is said: ‘And My Name YHVH…’”
If Moses perceived a higher revelation than the patriarchs, why mourn their absence?
“If so, why ‘woe’?”
Why does the Midrash express lament if Moses surpassed them?
“But the explanation lies in the Name El Shaddai, of which the Sages said: His divinity suffices for all creatures.”
El Shaddai refers to the divine power embedded within creation itself.
“Meaning, the divine power found in all existence, which becomes nature itself.”
The patriarchs accessed God’s presence as it manifests through natural reality.
“Indeed, the holy patriarchs—each of them was truly a man of God.”
The patriarchs possessed a unique spiritual refinement.
“And they discovered divine power within nature itself, as said: His divinity suffices for all creatures.”
They did not need anything beyond nature to sense God.
“However, not every mind can bear this.”
Most people cannot perceive God within the natural order.
“Therefore Israel now must find His divine power through Torah and mitzvot, which are above nature.”
The generation of Moses requires a higher, supernatural revelation.
“Through them we can draw power from the higher world.”
Torah and mitzvot link us to the transcendent realm.
“For through nature itself we lack the power to repair ourselves.”
Nature alone cannot elevate Israel spiritually.
“And this is truly the revelation of the Name YHVH to Moses— the aspect of Torah and gifts given to Israel.”
YHVH signifies revelation beyond nature, embodied in Torah.
“This is the meaning of ‘He was, He is, and He will be’—the joining of present with future.”
The Name YHVH unites temporal states, transcending time.
“And it is the root-power above nature and above time.”
Torah connects to the primal divine root.
“However, this world could not receive illumination from the upper world without the prior deeds of the patriarchs, who refined the body of nature.”
The patriarchs prepared creation to receive Torah.
“Then it became possible to give the Torah to this world and to unite the two worlds, which was the true purpose of creation.”
The patriarchs enabled the final union of heaven and earth.
“And behold, Moses was indeed prepared to receive the Torah and was completely beyond nature, as the Zohar explains on ‘Remove your shoes.’”
Moses’ spiritual level transcended physical limitation.
“And according to his level, he indeed spoke rightly in saying: ‘Why have You harmed…?’”
From Moses’ perspective, redemption should have occurred immediately.
“But God showed him that all this occurs only after the prior deeds of the patriarchs.”
Moses needed to understand the role of the patriarchs in preparing the world.
“As in the saying: ‘If one had not removed the clod, would you have found the pearl beneath it?’”
The patriarchs cleared the obstruction so Israel could receive Torah.
The Sefat Emet explains that though Moses reached a higher revelation, the patriarchs uniquely accessed divinity within nature. Their spiritual labor made it possible for Torah—revelation beyond nature—to enter the world and unite the upper and lower realms.
