Hidden Impressions in the Heart

Vaeira · תרל"ט (1878) · Essay 2

We must learn from this section that the Holy One, blessed be He, commanded that this passage be spoken to the Children of Israel, even though they did not listen because of shortness of spirit.

The Sefat Emet teaches that God’s command to speak to Israel was meaningful even when they were unable to hear it due to their suffering.

Nevertheless, some impression of these words certainly remained within them, and after the redemption all the words became clarified to them retroactively.

Even unheard divine words leave a spiritual imprint that becomes recognizable only later, once redemption reveals their meaning.

For there exists some measure of knowledge within a person’s heart.

Every person naturally carries hidden inner awareness, even when it is not consciously felt.

And the Holy One, blessed be He, Who examines kidneys and heart, perceives it.

God fully understands these subtle inner stirrings that are beyond our own ability to recognize.

He understands this thought.

God grasps even the faint, unformed thoughts residing deep within.

Even that which a person himself cannot sense, as our sages said: “Before the thought is formed in a person’s heart, He understands it.”

The Sefat Emet applies the rabbinic teaching that God perceives thoughts before they arise, emphasizing the divine awareness of unrealized spiritual impressions.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that even when Israel could not hear God’s words, those words left a subtle impression within them. God perceives the hidden inner knowledge in every heart, understanding even unformed thoughts, and later redemption reveals what was previously concealed.
