Redeeming Speech Through Torah
“Concerning the four expressions of redemption.”
The Sefat Emet introduces a teaching on the four stages of redemption mentioned in the Torah.
“Based on what is written in the Zohar, that speech was in exile until the giving of the Torah, as it is written ‘And God spoke,’ etc.”
The Zohar explains that true divine speech could not manifest fully until the revelation at Sinai.
“For there are five articulations of the mouth through which speech emerges.”
The Sefat Emet refers to the traditional five organs of speech that shape all human utterance.
“And these correspond to the Five Books of the Torah.”
The structure of human speech mirrors the structure of the Torah itself.
“And the voice is simple and encompasses everything.”
The primordial voice precedes all articulation and contains all potential speech.
“Only the other four articulations are vessels for the actual speech.”
Articulated speech depends on specific verbal ‘vessels,’ while the pure voice is undifferentiated.
“Therefore, in the Ten Utterances was included all of creation.”
Creation emerged from divine speech articulated through these spiritual ‘organs.’
“But the aspect of the Ten Commandments is the special choosing of Israel.”
The Ten Commandments signify Israel’s unique role in receiving and expressing divine speech.
“For they were given the power of the mouth to clarify God’s governance in the world through the Torah.”
Israel’s speech, aligned with Torah, reveals divine order within creation.
“For speech is the manifestation of His kingship.”
God rules the world through His word, and Israel participates in this through Torah speech.
“Therefore, concerning this there were disputes and quarrels.”
Because speech is a vessel of divine governance, it becomes a point of conflict when misused or obscured.
“As it is written, ‘And from there it separated,’ etc.”
Division arises when speech is fragmented or distorted.
“And this was the exile of Egypt through the four aforementioned expressions.”
Egypt represents the exile of speech, corresponding to the four expressions of redemption that reverse that exile.
“And it is not possible to elaborate further on these matters.”
The Sefat Emet signals that the mystical depth of this teaching exceeds the present scope.
“And see the Zohar on Shemot on the verse ‘Come with me from Lebanon,’ etc.”
He directs the reader to additional Zoharic teachings that illuminate this idea of redeemed speech.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that the four expressions of redemption correspond to the restoration of divine speech from exile. Human articulation reflects the fivefold structure of the Torah, and Israel’s role is to reveal divine governance through sanctified speech—a role damaged in Egypt and restored at Sinai.
