Israel Witnessing the Eternal Name

Vaeira · תרמ"ח (1887) · Essay 1

“In the Midrash: What is man, that he should come after the King… that which has already been done…”

The Sefat Emet begins by citing the Midrash, which teaches that creation and its order were already established by God, and man merely enters a world whose foundations are pre‑set.

For the Holy One, blessed be He, showed Moses that the exile in Egypt was not accidental, but that the revelation of the Divine Name depended on it.

Moses is taught that Egypt is not a detour but a necessary stage for revealing God’s essential Name.

For to the Patriarchs His great Name was not made known.

The Sefat Emet highlights that even the Patriarchs only perceived limited aspects of God’s Name.

The reason is that this Name signifies “He was, He is, and He will be.”

God’s essential Name encompasses all time and all existence, beyond what the Patriarchs directly encountered.

And the Children of Israel were created to clarify His great Name in the world.

Israel’s mission is to reveal God’s unity and presence throughout creation.

They must pass through all places.

Israel’s journeying—both physical and spiritual—serves to illuminate every aspect of creation.

For they are witnesses, as it is said: “You are My witnesses.”

The role of Israel is to testify to God’s presence in all realms.

And they must testify that the Lord is God in the heavens above and on the earth.

Israel’s testimony must span all dimensions—upper and lower worlds.

As it is said: “You have been shown to know…”

God revealed Himself so that Israel could bear absolute witness to His unity.

Therefore, after the redemption it is written: “And you shall know that I am the Lord.”

The purpose of redemption is deeper knowledge of God’s Name.

And just as this Name includes what was and what will be…

God’s Name spans all times and all realities.

So too must Israel clarify all places.

Israel’s mission mirrors the expansiveness of God’s Name.

And behold, all creation arose before Him in thought before the world was created.

Creation has an inner, primordial blueprint in the Divine mind.

As it is said: “You formed Your world from the beginning.”

The Sefat Emet cites proof that creation existed first as Divine intention.

And this design is the inner essence and purpose of all creation.

The root-level blueprint is the true goal to which all events point.

This is the meaning of “In the beginning God created,” which the Sages interpreted as “for the sake of Torah and Israel,” who are called ‘Beginning.’

Israel and Torah embody the primordial purpose embedded in creation.

Meaning: the inner essence and purpose, which include all details and all generations.

Israel and Torah contain within them the totality of history and existence.

And this is the meaning of “that which has already been done.”

The plan is pre‑established; Israel reveals it over time.

For the order of all processes has already been prepared.

All developments in history follow a Divine structure.

And all this Israel needed to bring from potential into actuality.

Israel activates what was latent in creation.

For everything depends on man.

The human role is central to manifesting the Divine plan.

As it is written: “Let us make man…”

Humanity is created as a partner in creation.

“And they shall rule over the fish of the sea…”

This dominion reflects human responsibility to elevate creation.

As the Zohar says there.

The Zohar expands on this partnership between humanity and creation.

That Israel, called “Adam,” as it is said: “You are Adam.”

Israel particularly embodies the human role in this cosmic mission.

Needed to descend to the depths and then ascend to the heavens to be complete testimony.

Israel’s suffering and elevation together form full testimony to God.

And God revealed this to Israel, so they would know that the revelation of His Name depends on this service.

Israel’s labor in exile is essential to revealing God’s Name.

And when this is known, one must accept exile with a joyful heart.

Understanding the purpose transforms exile into meaningful service.

But the heavy labor usually makes one forget the main intention, as it is said: “They did not listen to Moses.”

Suffering obscures the deeper purpose and blocks spiritual hearing.

Therefore Moses said: “Behold, the Children of Israel have not listened.”

Moses points out that Israel’s spiritual blockage precedes Pharaoh’s resistance.

“So how will Pharaoh listen to me?”

If Israel cannot hear, how could Pharaoh respond?

For Moses knew that this is the key to redemption: Israel must first accept these matters to perform their service for the sake of Heaven.

Inner readiness is the prerequisite for redemption.

Thus it is written: “He commanded them regarding the Children of Israel and regarding Pharaoh,” placing Israel first, for this was the beginning and root of redemption.

The Torah emphasizes that Israel’s internal preparation precedes external deliverance.

And it is taught that this is one of the ten a fortiori arguments in the Torah.

The verse is included among classical kal vachomer teachings.

It teaches that first one must be redeemed inwardly to hear the word of God.

Inner liberation precedes national redemption.

And this is the key to redemption.

The entire process hinges on internal readiness.

Summary: The Sefat Emet explains that Israel’s exile, suffering, and journeying are integral to revealing God’s Name and manifesting the primordial Divine plan. Inner redemption must precede external redemption.
