Patriarchs Preparing the Land

Vaeira · תרנ"א (1890) · Essay 1

The matter of the distinction between the Patriarchs and the level of Moses our teacher, peace be upon him.

The Sefat Emet opens by explaining the fundamental difference between the spiritual role of the Patriarchs and that of Moses.

For he brought the Torah down from the heavens.

Moses’ unique function was to draw divine wisdom from above into the world.

But the Patriarchs became a chariot for the Divine Presence, and this is the rectification within the earth.

The Patriarchs’ holiness sanctified the physical realm itself, preparing the world to receive Godliness.

And this was required beforehand, as it is said: “Derekh Eretz preceded the Torah.”

The earthly foundation must be refined before the Torah can descend; the Patriarchs accomplished this groundwork.

And this is the aspect of the Land of Israel, a sanctified place.

The sanctification achieved by the Patriarchs parallels the sanctity of the Land, prepared to host the Divine.

Prepared for the resting of the Divine Presence.

Both the Patriarchs and the Land serve as vessels capable of receiving the Shekhinah.

Therefore in prayer we mention “the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”

Our ability to approach God relies on the spiritual pathways opened by the Patriarchs.

For we are able to receive Divinity through the power of the Patriarchs.

Their achievements continue to empower all generations to connect to God.

And this is the essence of redemption in the body, which is composed of the four elements.

Human physicality must be refined; redemption involves elevating the elemental structure of the body.

And these are the four expressions of redemption, for the four elements have great roots in the letters of the Divine Name, as is known.

The Sefat Emet connects the four biblical expressions of redemption with the mystical structure of creation.

And through the power of the three Patriarchs—and of King David, peace be upon him—we can refine the four elements.

These righteous figures give us the spiritual tools needed to elevate and purify the material aspects of existence.

And when they are refined, one becomes worthy of the resting of the Divine Presence.

Redemption is achieved when the physical world becomes a fitting vessel for the Divine.

Summary: The Patriarchs sanctified the earthly realm, preparing it for divine presence, while Moses brought the Torah down from above. Their combined influence enables the refinement of the four elemental components of the human being and the world, culminating in the revelation of the Shekhinah.
