Divine Counsel Prevailing Over Stumbling

In the Midrash: “When Pharaoh speaks to you…,” it reveals from the beginning… “My counsel shall stand”… until, “Is there perhaps a judge above?” “I will perform My desire,” for He desires to vindicate His creatures.

The Sefat Emet opens by citing the Midrash: God’s actions in Egypt already reflect a predetermined Divine counsel, rooted in His desire to justify and uplift creation. Even when events appear driven by human power like Pharaoh, the ultimate plan is Divine.

As it is written: “Many are the thoughts of a person, but the counsel of God—it shall stand.”

Human thoughts are many and scattered, but the Divine plan always prevails. This sets the frame: all events, personal and cosmic, align with God’s deeper intent.

For everything that happens to a person individually, and likewise to creation as a whole, all is arranged by Him, who prepared everything with His wisdom and will.

Nothing is random; each occurrence, whether large or small, is part of a purposeful Divine orchestration.

And the Holy One, blessed be He, desired to bring merit to Israel and gave us Torah and commandments, which are counsels for repairing all obstacles that arise.

The mitzvot are not merely duties but guidance—practical tools for navigating and correcting the challenges that life inevitably brings.

“And the counsel of God shall stand.” This results in the fact that through keeping His commandments we can elevate and repair all those many thoughts.

By practicing mitzvot, fragmented human thoughts and experiences become integrated into God’s enduring plan.

And so too: “My counsel shall stand.”

The verse reflects not only God’s overarching plan but the capacity to actualize it through Israel’s actions.

And this is what the Midrash says: that God showed Moses how Israel would sin in the last generations, and gave him counsel to write the Song.

Even future failures are anticipated and provided with a remedy; the “Song” (Ha’azinu) becomes a spiritual anchor across generations.

And likewise in the exile of Egypt, for all was caused by Him, and He prepared the salvation for Israel.

The pattern repeats: exile itself is a Divinely prepared process, already containing within it the seeds of redemption.

“I will perform My desire” refers to Israel’s role in repairing physical action.

God’s will becomes manifest through Israel’s sanctification of the material world.

To draw forth His will even into every physical deed.

The Divine is not limited to the spiritual; the goal is to infuse ordinary acts with holiness.

And all with His help, for He desires to justify us.

The entire process is supported by Divine assistance, grounded in God’s desire to elevate His people.

And examine this carefully.

A closing invitation to meditate on the depth of this Divine-human partnership.

The Sefat Emet teaches that all events originate in Divine wisdom and will. Torah and mitzvot serve as practical counsel for navigating and repairing worldly challenges. Exile and redemption alike are prearranged by God, who desires to justify Israel and bring His will into the physical world through their actions.
