Mitzvos as the vessel for the Torah's light

"You shall be holy" — and in the Midrash: "You are exalted forever, Hashem"... You gave holiness to Yisrael forever, as it says "You shall be holy."

The Sefas Emes opens with the Midrash that reads "Kedoshim tihyu" as Hashem granting Bnei Yisrael an everlasting holiness.

For "you shall be holy" is both a decree of the verse and a promise — that there is forever a holiness hidden within the souls of Bnei Yisrael.

The command is also a guarantee: a concealed kedushah permanently resides in the souls of Bnei Yisrael.

As Chazal said: a person should always see himself as though a holy one dwells within his innards.

Each person should be aware that a holy presence is lodged deep within him at all times.

As it is written "I, Hashem, have not changed... and you, Bnei Yisrael, are not consumed," for "Hashem's portion is His people," and there is within them a point of Godliness that admits no change and cannot be altered.

Because Bnei Yisrael are Hashem's own portion, they carry an unchanging nekudah of divinity — an inner point that, like Hashem Himself, is immune to change.

And this was given to Yisrael when He said, "I am Hashem your God."

This eternal inner point was implanted at Sinai with the first of the Aseres HaDibros.

And in the Midrash: there are three holinesses, and two were given to Bnei Yisrael — see there.

The Sefas Emes points to a Midrash speaking of three holinesses, of which two were granted to Bnei Yisrael.

For it is taught: the Holy One, blessed be He, the Torah, and Yisrael are all one.

He invokes the well-known teaching that Hashem, the Torah, and Yisrael are essentially unified.

And these are the three holinesses: the holiness of the Holy One, the holiness of the Torah, and the holiness of Bnei Yisrael.

The three kedushos correspond to those three: Hashem, Torah, and Yisrael.

Now the holiness of Bnei Yisrael is through the mitzvos, as we say "[He] sanctified us with His mitzvos."

The holiness belonging to Bnei Yisrael is realized specifically through the performance of mitzvos.

For the mitzvos are the essential "form" of the person — the 248 [limbs] and 365 [sinews].

The 248 positive and 365 negative mitzvos correspond to the limbs and sinews; they are what truly shape a person into a "form."

And through the fulfillment of each mitzvah, that corresponding limb is rectified to receive illumination and the "form of Adam," concerning which they said: "you are called Adam."

Each mitzvah refines its matching limb, fitting it to receive divine light and the true human form — which is why Bnei Yisrael alone are called "Adam."

For within the human body there is both "adam" (man) and "beheimah" (animal).

Every person contains two dimensions: a higher human element and a lower animal element.

But Bnei Yisrael are made into vessels, through the mitzvos, to "shed one form and don another" — the form of Adam — without the participation of the animal element.

Through mitzvos, Bnei Yisrael transform themselves, casting off the animal form and clothing themselves purely in the true human form.

And concerning this they said: "and you shall do them (osam)" — read it as "you yourselves (atem)," as though you made your very selves — see there.

By doing the mitzvos one "makes oneself," fashioning one's own true form, as Chazal derive from the word "osam/atem."

And when they merit this form, they become the "lamp of the mitzvah" that cleaves to the "light of the Torah," for the Torah is the intermediary between the holiness of the Holy One and the holiness of Bnei Yisrael.

Once a person attains this true form through mitzvos, he is a vessel — a lamp — ready to bind to the Torah's light; and the Torah bridges the holiness of Hashem and the holiness of Yisrael.

For the Torah contains both the portion of the Giver and the portion of the receivers.

The Torah itself joins both sides — Hashem who gives and Yisrael who receive.

The mitzvos are in man's actions alone, except that they serve as a lamp and vessel upon which the light of the Torah can rest, and then one cleaves to the Holy One, as above.

Mitzvos are deeds performed by man, but their role is to be the vessel that holds the Torah's light, through which a person attaches himself to Hashem.

This is the meaning of "and you shall sanctify yourselves" — through the mitzvos.

The first stage of sanctification, "vehiskadishtem," is achieved by performing mitzvos.

"And you shall be holy" — through the light of the Torah, as above.

The culmination, "viheyisem kedoshim," comes when the vessel of mitzvos is filled with the light of the Torah, binding one to Hashem.

Summary: An unchanging point of holiness is permanently hidden in the souls of Bnei Yisrael. Mitzvos refine each limb and shape a person into the true "form of Adam," free of the animal element, making him a vessel — a lamp — upon which the light of the Torah can rest. The Torah bridges the holiness of Hashem and of Yisrael, so that "you shall sanctify yourselves" through mitzvos leads to "you shall be holy" through the Torah's light, binding one to Hashem.
