Song of the Torah Letters

“The Song of Songs.”

The Sefat Emet opens by noting that the title itself invites interpretation.

One may say that it is the song that emerges from all songs of Solomon, for how can we sing before the Blessed One?

The Rebbe explains that human song seems unfit for the Divine, raising the question of how mortals offer song to God.

But the letters of Torah are exalted, and when a person brings them forth properly, they sing and ascend to their source.

Torah letters possess an inherent sanctity; when spoken with purity, they themselves become the true song rising upward.

Thus one may explain “He who chooses the songs of praise” as referring to a song in which the melody itself sings.

The Divine choice focuses on the inner song embedded in the sacred words, not merely human performance.

And in the Midrash: “The heart of the wise makes his mouth discerning,” as it is known that a person can speak great matters even without comprehending their depth, so long as they are words of truth—understand this.

Even limited human understanding does not invalidate the truth of sacred speech; the mouth can express more than the mind grasps.

Only to the extent that a person knows that the tongue and the letters of Torah themselves assist him, as it is said: “All assist in fulfilling the will of the King.”

Awareness that Torah letters aid one’s spiritual ascent enables deeper attachment to them.

Then he can cleave to them, as noted above.

Once a person recognizes the letters as Divine helpers, he can truly cling to them.

And so the Holy One, blessed be He, arranged that everything depends on the person, and through him a higher and higher level is awakened, up to God.

The human being is the catalyst through which ever-higher spiritual realms are stirred.

And the highest of them all is the Song of Songs, Holy of Holies.

The Song of Songs represents the supreme form of sacred expression, the pinnacle of spiritual ascent.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that true song comes from the Torah’s letters themselves; when spoken properly, they ascend and awaken higher realms. Human speech, though limited, becomes a conduit for Divine song, culminating in the holiness of the Song of Songs.
