Faith Restored Through Song
Emunah · Shirat HaYam · Miracles · Redemption · Torah
Rashi notes: “It says ‘will sing’ and not ‘sang’… and also: what is the meaning of ‘to say’?”
He begins by raising Rashi’s questions about the future tense and the phrase “to say.”
One can say: since the Song is one of the sections of the Torah…
The Sefat Emet explains that the Song at the Sea is not ordinary speech but a Torah-portion.
And a human being does not have the power to originate matters hidden from all living beings.
He stresses that humans cannot invent Torah on their own.
Rather, Israel drew down those letters written before Him on high, in the form in which they fashioned this Song.
The Song was “drawn down” from pre‑existing divine letters, not authored by Israel.
Thus “Then will sing” means they composed the Song through those letters.
The future tense hints that the Song existed beforehand, awaiting revelation.
And “they said, saying: I will sing…” refers to speaking through these letters.
“To say” means channeling the divine letters into human speech.
And this was through “they believed.”
Faith is the mechanism that draws Torah into the world.
For through proper faith they can draw the power of Torah into the world.
Faith opens the conduit for divine revelation.
And it is written: “They believed… then will sing.”
The order shows that belief precedes the Song.
It appears that the essence of the Song was given because of this faith.
Their restored belief is what enabled the Song to descend.
But we must understand: what is the praise for this faith, since they saw the miracles with their own eyes?
If they saw the miracles directly, why is their belief so esteemed?
But it seems clear that the power of Israel’s faith is immense and beloved before God.
Their core capacity for faith is exceptionally precious.
Only due to the harsh slavery and fear of Egypt they fell from their faith.
Oppression had suppressed their natural faith.
And through the splitting of the Sea they returned to their faith.
The miracle restored the faith that had been buried.
And even though after witnessing the miracles they no longer required faith…
Once the miracles were evident, belief was no longer “necessary.”
Nevertheless, their return to faith was more precious to them and to God than their seeing with their eyes.
The reawakening of faith is more valued than sensory proof.
And they desired not to see, once their faith had returned.
They preferred faith over direct vision.
And since Scripture testifies “they believed,” it is testimony that they returned to a faith that would not be shaken even if the trials returned.
Their renewed faith reached permanence and resilience.
And this faith was also for future generations.
Their restored belief created a legacy of faith.
Therefore they had the power to sing a Song that encompasses all the days of exile and the final redemption, as the Sages taught.
The Song at the Sea contains prophetic energy for all future redemptions.
Summary: The Song at the Sea was revealed, not composed, drawn down through divine letters by the power of renewed faith. Israel’s restored belief—more precious than the miracles themselves—enabled them to channel a Song spanning all generations and all redemptions.
