Each generation's madreigah and the strength of the klal

Regarding the sin of Nadav and Avihu, "which He had not commanded…" and "your brethren, the entire house of Yisrael, shall weep…"
The Sefas Emes opens with the death of Nadav and Avihu, who brought a "strange fire" that was not commanded, and the Torah's instruction that all of Bnei Yisrael mourn them.
One may suggest that Bnei Yisrael placed "naaseh" before "nishma" (we will do before we will hear) like the malachei hashareis (ministering angels).
At Matan Torah, Bnei Yisrael reached the level of the angels, who carry out Hashem's will instinctively before even hearing the reason.
Afterward they fell from this level, and it was said "you shall die like men."
After the cheit ha'egel they descended from that angelic madreigah, and so it was decreed that they would die "like men" rather than remain on the deathless level of angels.
But Nadav and Avihu were holding fast to the first level, like the angels, of whom it is said "doers of His word, to hearken (to hear afterward)."
Nadav and Avihu clung to the original angelic state of "naaseh before nishma" — acting on Hashem's ratzon first, and only then listening.
And the reason is that an angel feels within itself the ratzon Hashem (His will), and they are called "doers of His will," as is known.
An angel directly senses the ratzon Hashem within itself, so it needs no command — it simply does His will. Nadav and Avihu sought to live this way.
But because the klal (community) of Yisrael as a whole was not on this level, Nadav and Avihu were punished.
Their avodah was too high for the generation; since the klal had already fallen from the angelic madreigah, individuals could not unilaterally serve from it, and they were taken.
And it may be that this very point is included in what Chazal said — that they ruled a halachah in front of their teacher, and also that they said "when will these two elders die…"
Their "ruling before their teacher" and impatience with the two elders express the same flaw: they presumed to act on a level higher than what the generation's leadership had set.
That is, they said that one could restore and lead Bnei Yisrael just as before the sin.
They believed they could lead the people back to the pre-cheit angelic level immediately, restoring "naaseh before nishma" for the whole nation at once.
But in truth this was not His will, for everything unfolds in an order already prepared before Him.
Hashem did not will an instant return; history moves through a Divinely arranged seder (order), and each stage has its appointed time.
Each and every generation has its own particular mode of Divine conduct.
Every dor receives the hanhagah (form of Divine guidance) suited to it; one generation cannot simply leap into the avodah of another.
Even though the sin caused this, nevertheless it is all true.
Although the lower madreigah came about because of the sin, the path of each generation is still Hashem's true will and not merely a "fallen" detour.
[And perhaps this is the hint in "through those near to Me I will be sanctified," because of the reason "and before all the people I will be honored" — that the power of the collective, the simple folk of Bnei Yisrael, prevails over the power of the unique individuals who are close to Him, as above.]
Hashem's honor rests more on the whole klal — even its simplest members — than on a few elevated individuals; the strength of the community outweighs that of the closest yechidim, which is why their solitary avodah could not stand.
Therefore "the house of Yisrael shall weep" over the burning — for they (the people) caused their death, as above.
Since the generation's level is what determined that such lofty avodah could not be sustained, all of Bnei Yisrael bear responsibility and must weep for Nadav and Avihu.
Summary: Nadav and Avihu clung to the angelic level of "naaseh before nishma" that Bnei Yisrael had lost after the cheit ha'egel; but Hashem's will is that each generation serve according to its own appointed madreigah, and because Hashem's honor rests on the whole klal more than on lofty individuals, their unilateral avodah could not endure, and all of Yisrael must mourn them.
