Enduring blessing flows through the Avos

On the verse, "And Avraham gave all that he had to Yitzchak… and to the sons of the concubines… Avraham gave gifts" (Bereishis 25:5-6).

The Torah contrasts two kinds of giving: Avraham gave "all that he had" to Yitzchak, but to the sons of the concubines he gave mere "gifts."

The difference between them is as the Midrash says on "And He shall give you" (Bereishis 27:28) — "He gives, and gives again."

The blessing to Yitzchak is an ongoing, renewing flow — a giving that gives and gives again without end.

And likewise it is written here, "And he gave (vayiten)."

The same word "vayiten" used for Yitzchak signals this perpetual, self-renewing kind of giving.

For this was set in an order arranged forever, for all the abundance (shefa) that came to Avraham flows from him to Yitzchak, and afterward to Yaakov.

The blessing follows a fixed, eternal channel: the divine shefa descends from Avraham to Yitzchak to Yaakov, an unbroken chain.

"And to the sons of the concubines… Avraham gave gifts and sent them away…"

By contrast, the sons of the concubines received only one-time "gifts" and were sent away, outside the channel of lasting blessing.

For there is a gift given "with the back of the hand" (k'le'achar yad), as it says, "and he sent them away from Yitzchak," as it is written, "and He repays His enemies to their face (to destroy them)" (Devarim 7:10).

A casual, dismissive gift is like Hashem "repaying His enemies to their face" — paying out their reward immediately so as to be rid of them, rather than as a lasting bond.

But "to those who love Him, He keeps the covenant and the kindness" (Devarim 7:9).

To those bound to Him in love, Hashem maintains an enduring covenant of chesed, not a one-time payout.

Therefore the "chesed to Avraham" comes to Bnei Yisrael through the intermediacy of Yitzchak and Yaakov.

Avraham's chesed reaches us only as a lasting inheritance, transmitted down through Yitzchak and Yaakov.

About this it is written, "How abundant is Your goodness, which You have hidden away (tzafanta)" (Tehillim 31:20).

The truly enduring good is the kind that is "stored away" and preserved, not spent at once.

In order to be something lasting — "a threefold cord is not quickly severed" (Koheles 4:12).

The three Avos form a threefold cord, a structure built to endure and not easily be broken.

As it is written, "Yaakov is the rope of His inheritance" (Devarim 32:9).

Yaakov is described as a "rope," the binding cord of Hashem's nachalah.

Rashi explains: like a rope of three strands, see there.

Rashi reads the "rope" as woven of three strands — the three Avos intertwined into one strong cord.

And the Avos were vessels (keilim) to receive the abundance.

The three Avos served as the receiving vessels for the divine shefa.

A preparation for Klal Yisrael.

Their role as keilim was to prepare the channel through which blessing would reach all of Klal Yisrael.

And it appears that for this reason Avraham fathered Yishmael and the sons of Keturah — to show that, although all our existence is through the power of the Avos…

Avraham fathered other children precisely to make clear that, even though our survival flows entirely from the Avos…

…despite all this, the essence (ikar) is Bnei Yisrael.

…the true purpose and central recipient of the blessing is Bnei Yisrael alone.

As it is brought: Yisrael arose in (divine) thought before the world was created.

Bnei Yisrael were the original intent of creation, present in Hashem's thought before the world existed.

And for the sake of Yisrael, the Holy One established three Avos, who are themselves the Merkavah (chariot).

The Avos, who are the very "chariot" carrying the Divine Presence, were raised up for the sake of Yisrael.

And He brought their souls down to this world.

Hashem sent the Avos' souls into this world to fulfill their purpose.

And to prepare the way for their children after them.

The Avos came to pave the path of blessing and connection for all their descendants who would follow.

Summary: The Sefas Emes contrasts the two givings in the parsha: to Yitzchak, Avraham gave "all that he had" — a perpetual, self-renewing flow of shefa that descends in a fixed, eternal channel from Avraham to Yitzchak to Yaakov; but to the sons of the concubines he gave mere one-time "gifts," like Hashem "repaying His enemies to their face" to be rid of them. The lasting blessing is the "stored-away good," the threefold cord of the three Avos who served as keilim to receive the shefa and prepare the way for Klal Yisrael. Avraham fathered Yishmael and the sons of Keturah precisely to show that, though all our existence flows through the Avos, the true purpose of it all is Bnei Yisrael, who arose in Hashem's thought before creation.
