Daily renewal and the whole days
Renewal · Temimim · Hischadshus · Tzaddikim · Shefa
In the Midrash: "Hashem knows the days of the wholehearted…" — "their years are perfect…" The meaning of "days of the wholehearted" is that they are days containing completeness, for the fact that Hashem created this world to renew itself every day and every year is for the good — so that there should be a new illumination at every time.
The "days of the temimim" are days filled with wholeness; Hashem designed the world to renew itself constantly precisely so that fresh Divine light can shine into every moment.
And concerning this we bless Him as "renewing each day the work of Creation."
This is why our berachos describe Hashem as continually renewing maaseh bereishis — Creation is not a one-time event but an ongoing daily act.
For if Creation ran without change, it would grow distant — through the accumulation of time — from the root of its life-force.
Were the world static, the mere passage of time would steadily distance it from its source of vitality, leaving it stale and disconnected.
Therefore Hashem created it so that each day there is a fresh influx of life-force, as above.
To prevent that distancing, Hashem built into Creation a daily renewal of vitalizing shefa, keeping the world ever-connected to its root.
Therefore a person must see to it that he has at least one new illumination each day.
Just as Creation is renewed daily, a person must ensure he too receives at least one fresh spiritual insight or awakening every day.
And through this he merits to feel something new each day.
By seeking that daily renewal, a person comes to experience genuine freshness in his avodah each day.
For each day is drawn after the arousal of the previous day.
The days are linked: today's spiritual state flows from and builds upon yesterday's awakening.
As it is written, "If you surely hearken" — in the old you will hear the new.
The doubled "shamo'a tishma" is read as: by attending to the "old" — what you already received — you become able to hear the "new" that follows.
Now, the tzaddikim rectify each day all that they can, and of this it is said, "advanced (literally: come) in days."
Tzaddikim use each day to its fullest, repairing and elevating whatever they can; "ba bayamim" describes one who has "come" with all his days, none left empty.
that there is no time from which he does not take something for the service of Hashem.
The tzaddik leaves no moment unused, drawing some measure of avodas Hashem out of every span of time.
And this is "Hashem knows the days of the wholehearted" — that in every hour he attains a unique insight and knowledge.
The "days of the temimim" are days in which each hour yields its own distinct attainment, so that the time is truly "whole."
And therefore they draw down shefa (abundance) and flow to the entire world each day, for they bind all of Creation to its root — and this is "and their inheritance shall be forever."
By filling each moment with avodah, the tzaddikim channel daily abundance into all the world, reconnecting Creation to its source; this enduring connection is their everlasting "inheritance."
We also explained that each day is drawn after the rectification of the day before it.
Returning to the theme of linkage: each day's spiritual standing is determined by the tikkun accomplished the day before.
It follows that one who rectifies his days bequeaths good to the entire world.
A person who repairs and elevates his own days thereby passes on benefit to all of Creation.
for through this, all of Creation comes to a level higher than before, as above.
Each properly rectified day lifts the entire world to a yet-higher rung, advancing all of Creation upward.
Summary: Hashem created the world to renew itself daily so that fresh Divine illumination can enter at every moment, keeping Creation bound to its life-source rather than drifting away through the passage of time. A person must likewise seek at least one new illumination each day, for the days are linked — today flows from yesterday's awakening. The tzaddikim, who leave no moment without avodah, attain a unique insight in every hour ("days of the temimim"); by binding all of Creation to its root, they draw daily abundance into the world and bequeath an everlasting good that raises all of Creation higher.
