The soul's mission overrides rest; the inner land

In the Midrash: "Those sent on a mitzvah override the Shabbos."
The Midrash states the halachic principle that messengers dispatched to perform a mitzvah may set aside Shabbos restrictions. The Sefas Emes will read this as a profound spiritual teaching.
The hint is that in truth Shabbos is the rest and the return of the soul to its root, as it says "let each man remain in his place" — resembling the state of the neshamah before it was sent into this world.
Shabbos is a return: the neshamah goes back to its source, recovering the restful, undivided closeness to Hashem it knew before being dispatched into olam hazeh.
But the person was sent into this world, and this shlichus (mission) — to do the will of the Creator, may He be blessed — overrides the Shabbos; and as it is said, "it would have been better for a person not to have been created than to have been created," yet even so, a person's primary desire and yearning must be to do the will of his Creator, and this overrides everything.
Although the neshamah longs to return to its restful root, the very purpose of being sent down is the mission of doing Hashem's will. Even though Chazal said it would have been "easier" not to be created, the soul's deepest desire must be to fulfill its shlichus — and that mission "pushes aside" even the Shabbos-rest of returning to the source.
And concerning this they said, "One hour of teshuvah and good deeds in this world is more beautiful than all the life of the World to Come."
Davka in this world, through active avodah — teshuvah and ma'asim tovim — a person accomplishes something even Olam Haba's pure rest cannot offer. The mission of doing here outweighs the bliss of return.
And this was the sin of the meraglim, as explained elsewhere at length on this.
The spies' failure, the Sefas Emes says, was precisely a refusal of this active mission — preferring the sheltered "rest" of the wilderness over entering the land to do Hashem's will in the world of action.
And we have already written that in truth the dor hamidbar (generation of the wilderness) was not prepared to enter Eretz Yisrael, as several reasons are brought in the Midrashim of Chazal.
The Sefas Emes acknowledges that the desert generation, on its own level, was indeed not fully ready for the avodah of settling the land — Chazal give various reasons.
But it is written, "in its time I will hasten it," and Chazal said: if they merit — "I will hasten it"; if they do not merit — "in its time."
The pasuk about redemption holds two possibilities: a destined "appointed time," or an accelerated "hastening" if Bnei Yisrael are worthy. Merit can override the natural timetable.
The explanation: that His conduct of the world, may He be blessed, clothes itself in the way of nature and time.
Ordinarily Hashem's hanhagah is garbed within the laws of nature and the unfolding of time, so things proceed at their "appointed" pace.
But according to a person's refinement, he merits to be drawn after His conduct, may He be blessed, without the garb of nature — and therefore "I will hasten it," even not according to the order of nature.
As a person purifies himself, he can attach to Hashem's guidance above the natural order, so that things come "hastened," supernaturally, beyond nature's normal schedule.
And behold, Eretz Yisrael itself contains several levels, and had the dor hamidbar entered together with Moshe Rabbeinu, peace be upon him, they would have come to the penimiyus (inner dimension) of Eretz Yisrael, above the garb of nature and time.
The land has outer and inner layers. Entering under Moshe's leadership — the man of the supernatural Torah-level — they would have reached the inner dimension of the land, where nature and time no longer conceal the Divine. There the desert generation's "unreadiness" for the ordinary land would have been irrelevant.
And therefore Yehoshua and Kalev said, "The land… the land is very good…"
Yehoshua and Kalev, the faithful spies, spoke of "the land" twice — and the Sefas Emes finds meaning in the repetition.
Twice "the land."
The doubled phrase "ha'aretz… ha'aretz" is not redundant; it points to two dimensions of the land.
To hint that they perceived the penimiyus (inner dimension) of Eretz Yisrael, where even that generation could enter.
The two faithful spies saw past the outer land to its inner essence — and recognized that on that inner level, even the wilderness generation was fit to enter, since there nature's barriers fall away.
This vision the other spies did not see.
The other ten saw only the outer, natural land — its giants and fortified cities — and so judged the generation incapable, missing the inner dimension entirely.
And this is the meaning of "the land through which [we passed]…"
The very wording of the spies' report hints at this deeper layer of the land — the inner Eretz Yisrael that lies above nature, accessible to those drawn after Hashem's hanhagah.
Summary: Shabbos is the neshamah's return to its restful root, yet the person's mission (shlichus) to do Hashem's will in this world "overrides" even that rest — for one hour of teshuvah and good deeds here surpasses all of Olam Haba. The meraglim's sin was refusing this active mission. Eretz Yisrael has an outer, natural layer and an inner penimiyus above nature and time; had the desert generation entered with Moshe, they would have reached that inner dimension — which Yehoshua and Kalev alone perceived in the doubled "ha'aretz" — where even they were fit to enter.
