בפסוק וישראל אהב כו' כי ב"ז הוא לו ועשה לו כתונת פסים.

“In the verse ‘And Israel loved… for he was a son of his old age to him, and he made him a coat of many colors.’”

The Sefat Emet opens by noting the Torah’s phrasing regarding Jacob’s love for Joseph and the making of the special garment.

לא מצינו בפסוק שיהי' שנאת השבטים ע"י הכתונת.

“We do not find in the verse that the brothers’ hatred arose because of the coat.”

The text clarifies that the Torah never states explicitly that the brothers hated Joseph due to the coat itself.

רק משום כי אותו אהב.

“Only because he loved him.”

The cause of their animosity was Jacob's unique love for Joseph, not the garment as an isolated factor.

וי"ל הפי' דידוע שאב ואם מושכין לבוש להבן עפ"י מחשבותם בקדושה בעת הזיוג.

“And one may explain that it is known that father and mother draw down a spiritual garment for the child through their holy thoughts at the moment of union.”

This introduces a mystical principle: a child’s spiritual ‘garment’ is formed by the parents’ elevated intentions at conception.

וז"ש שבן זקונים הוא לו ועשה לו כתונת פסים שהוא מלבוש יקר.

“Thus it says that he was a son of his old age to him, and he made him a coat of many colors, which is a precious garment.”

Joseph’s status as “son of his old age” signifies a refined spiritual garment, symbolized by the coat.

ועי"ז אהב אותו.

“And through this he loved him.”

This special spiritual quality deepened Jacob’s love for Joseph.

ועשה הוא כמו הנפש אשר עשו כדכ' בזוה"ק כי מעשה ידיו של אדם הוא הנפשות.

“‘And he made’ is like the expression ‘the souls they made,’ as written in the Zohar, for the handiwork of a person is the souls.”

The ‘making’ of the coat is likened to the spiritual ‘making’ of souls—an act of shaping spiritual essence.

ועשה לשון עבר [כי בן זקונים אעפ"י שהי' רק איזה שנים אחר לידת שאר השבטים רק שהמשיך לו נשמה מעלמא עתיקא].

“And ‘he made’ is in the past tense, for although he was only a few years younger than the other brothers, he received a soul drawn from the most ancient realm.”

The past tense hints that Joseph’s elevated soul was already drawn down at his conception, despite his minimal age difference from the other sons.

Summary: Joseph’s special garment reflects his spiritually elevated soul, drawn through Jacob’s sanctified intention, and this inner quality—more than the garment itself—was the true cause of Jacob’s unique love.
