Oral Torah Within the Mundane
“So that the Torah of God will be in your mouth…”
The Sefat Emet begins by explaining that the purpose of the Exodus was to enable the Torah to be fully internalized and expressed through a person’s very speech.
For the redemption from Egypt was in order that the light of holiness could shine even within the narrowness and natural concealment.
The Exodus revealed that divine illumination can penetrate the most constricted and obscured places of existence.
And this is called the Oral Torah.
The ability to bring holiness into the constricted realm is precisely the essence of Torah she-be’al peh.
For the Written Torah is above nature.
The Written Torah reflects divine revelation in its untouched, transcendent form.
And drawing the light of Torah into every physical action—this too is the Oral Torah, which was innovated through the toil of those who study Torah for its own sake.
The Oral Torah consists of humanly discovered pathways for channeling divine light into concrete life through sincere effort.
And thus he said that through the Exodus the Torah of God can be specifically “in your mouth.”
Only after the Exodus could the Torah be fully embodied and expressed in speech and deed.
And “you shall keep this statute” also means, as above, that when all conduct is guided by Torah, it resembles a statute.
Once actions are governed solely by divine guidance, they take on the quality of chok—obedience beyond full human comprehension.
For in the Torah itself every matter is understood by its supernal root and reason.
In its higher realm, Torah contains the inner rationale behind all commandments.
But below, within nature, it becomes a statute.
When manifest in the physical world, the deeper reasons remain hidden, producing the experience of chok.
At its appointed time, the action follows the inner vitality, as it is written: “In all your ways, know Him.”
The goal is that outward actions be guided by inner divine awareness.
And this statute is like “This is the statute of the Torah.”
The Sefat Emet concludes that the chok enacted in daily life reflects the fundamental chok of Torah itself: serving God even when reasons remain hidden.
The Sefat Emet teaches that the Exodus empowered the integration of Torah into embodied life, transforming divine transcendence into lived practice through the Oral Torah, which reveals holiness even within natural limits.
