Israel Revealing Divine Kingship

Bo · תרל"ז (1876) · Essay 1

In the Midrash: “The weight of a stone… the anger of a fool,” meaning that they provoke before Me with empty matters.

The Sefat Emet opens by citing the Midrash to illustrate how folly and meaningless provocations veil divine truth.

Know that the primary task of the Children of Israel in the world is to clarify the sovereignty of Heaven, to return everything to its Owner, who is the blessed Creator.

The mission of Israel is described as revealing God’s kingship by restoring all things to their divine root.

And for this were Israel created, called “My hosts,” who fight the battle of God to clarify that He is the King and that all belongs to Him.

The term “My hosts” signifies Israel as spiritual warriors engaged in revealing God’s absolute dominion.

And it is taught regarding the Ten Utterances: Why were they necessary? To exact judgment from the wicked and to give good reward to the righteous who sustain the world.

The multiplicity of creation statements allows for moral consequence: reward and punishment.

The explanation is that there is general, particular, and general.

The Sefat Emet invokes the hermeneutic structure of general–detail–general as a model for creation.

And if the world had been created with a single utterance, which is the unity—the first generality—there would be no reward or punishment.

Total unity would leave no room for moral differentiation or spiritual struggle.

But through the aspect of multiplicity and differentiated levels, the Holy One created the possibility of wicked people who oppose truth and deny the sovereignty of Heaven, and through this the aspect of unity could not be revealed.

Multiplicity allows denial and concealment, making divine unity hidden.

Of this it is said: “And He saw… the light that it was good, and He separated,” meaning He hid it for the righteous.

The primordial light symbolizes the concealed unity reserved for the righteous.

And thus they said: to give good reward—“How great is Your goodness that You have hidden…”

The hidden light becomes the ultimate reward.

The meaning is that through the particulars that extended from the root of unity, the work of the righteous is to draw near those that are distant and to return all particulars to unity.

Righteous individuals mend dispersion by restoring every detail to its source.

And the second generality, which emerges from the gathering of particulars, is of far greater excellence.

The unity rebuilt from multiplicity is higher than the original primordial unity.

And this is the “tenfoldness,” which is also unity, except that this unity is formed from the division of particulars.

The Ten Utterances create a unity synthesized from differentiation.

And this is the matter of the Ten Utterances.

They represent the higher unity emerging from multiplicity.

And truly, through this His glory is increased greatly—by giving power for the side of falsehood to exist in the world.

The divine allows falsehood to exist so that its ultimate clarification elevates God’s glory.

And when the righteous clarify that all is through His power, the glory of Heaven is thereby increased.

Revealing God as the true source even behind concealment magnifies His honor.

And this is the meaning of “For I have hardened…”

The hardening of Pharaoh’s heart was part of this divine design for revelation through concealment.

For Moses our teacher was from the world of separation (i.e., pure transcendence).

Moses came from a realm where unity is already clear and unchallenged.

And he said: “Why have You harmed…?”

Moses questioned the need for suffering and concealment.

And the Holy One answered him: through this exile, the glory of Heaven will be increased even more.

Exile and concealment ultimately generate a higher revelation of divine unity.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that creation’s multiplicity enables moral struggle and the ultimate revelation of a higher unity. Israel’s task is to restore all particulars to their divine root, and through confronting falsehood, the glory of Heaven is magnified.
