Forefathers Perfecting the Created World
“In Rashi: ‘And I appeared — to the Patriarchs.’”
The Sefat Emet begins by noting Rashi’s emphasis that God appeared specifically to the patriarchs.
“In the Midrash: ‘Woe for those who are lost…’”
This refers to the greatness of the patriarchs, whose spiritual stature is irreplaceable.
“The explanation is that surely the patriarchs were capable of attaining the Divine Name Havayah.”
They had the spiritual capacity to grasp God’s essential name.
“However, the choice of the patriarchs was in the aspect of El Shaddai, which is the honor of His kingship in the worlds He created.”
They focused their worship on revealing God’s sovereignty through the created order.
“As it is written: to repair the world through the kingship of Shaddai.”
Their mission was cosmic repair through elevating the lower worlds.
“This is what is meant by ‘the land of Canaan… the places where they dwelled.’”
The patriarchs dwelled in the land specifically to refine and elevate it spiritually.
“For they sought to repair the lower worlds, to publicize and reveal God’s glory — that His kingship rules over all.”
Their aim was universal recognition of divine sovereignty.
“Surely this was a very great matter for our holy patriarchs, for they knew they were capable of rising to exceedingly lofty levels.”
Despite their potential for profound spiritual ascent, they chose a different path.
“They set everything aside and devoted themselves to rectifying creation.”
They sacrificed personal spiritual elevation for the sake of the world’s repair.
“For He created everything for His glory.”
This justified their mission: revealing divine glory through worldly refinement.
“And in this merit God promised them that their descendants would also clarify His kingship.”
Their work established a legacy that their children would complete.
“Therefore there was the exile in Egypt.”
The exile enabled Israel to continue the task of refining the world.
“And so with all four exiles — all are surely to clarify the kingship of Heaven.”
Every exile contributes to revealing God’s sovereignty.
“As it is written: ‘He installs kings, and His is the kingship.’”
Worldly power is evidence of God’s ultimate rule.
“Therefore, since Israel on their own could not fully maintain the deeds of the patriarchs, the redemption had to come through suffering and great labor.”
Their limited strength required purification through hardship.
“This is God’s answer to Moses’ words: ‘Why have You done evil?’”
Moses’ protest is addressed in light of the patriarchs’ mission.
“For Moses was above nature and could not bear to see any evil in the world.”
His elevated perception left no place for the existence of evil.
“God answered him that since the patriarchs had entered with their own strength to repair this breach, He swore that their descendants would complete this great work.”
Israel must finish what the patriarchs began.
“In truth, the patriarchs prepared this for the children, enabling them to reach the level of redemption through their prior labor.”
The ancestors’ labor empowers the redemption.
“Thus Rashi says: ‘To the patriarchs,’ for they acted as fathers preparing for their children.”
The patriarchs shaped the spiritual path for future generations.
“And since the redemption was not entirely in Israel’s merit but in the patriarchs’, it came through suffering.”
The lack of full merit necessitated hardship.
“Thus: ‘I was not known’ — it does not say ‘I did not make Myself known.’”
The concealment was not from God’s side.
“Meaning: God did not withhold His name; rather, they chose a path that resulted in His name not being fully revealed to them.”
The patriarchs chose the path of El Shaddai.
“Truly, the work of the patriarchs is in the realm of rectifying action.”
Their focus was on perfecting deeds.
“And Moses’ level is that of the rest of Shabbat.”
Moses represents a higher, tranquil spiritual state.
“I heard from my holy grandfather: ‘I placed sand as a boundary to the sea’ — the weekdays serve as a boundary, lest vitality spread excessively.”
Weekdays limit divine energy to allow proper order.
“This is the same as the teaching that He said to His world: ‘Enough.’”
Creation requires boundaries to function.
The Sefat Emet teaches that the patriarchs chose the path of refining the lower world rather than seeking higher mystical attainment; this choice shaped all exiles and the process of redemption, culminating in Moses’ challenge and God’s response.
