Revealing Hidden Godliness Through Nature
ברש"י חבל על דאבדין כו'.
Rashi explains: “Woe for those who are lost…”
The Sefat Emet begins by noting that although Moses’ spiritual level surpassed that of the Patriarchs, something was still “lost” with their passing.
אף כי כ' שמדרגת מרע"ה הי' למעלה יותר.
Even though Moses’ level was certainly higher.
Moses attained a transcendence above nature, unmatched by the forefathers.
אעפ"כ הוטב בעיני השי"ת עבודת האבות לפרסום כבוד שמו ית' כמו שהוא נסתר בעולם הזה.
Nevertheless, the Holy One preferred the service of the Patriarchs for revealing His glory as it is hidden in this world.
The forefathers served God within the concealment of the world, making His presence known precisely within nature.
כמ"ש ז"ל למען אברהם שקראך אדון.
As our sages said: “For the sake of Abraham, who called You Master.”
Abraham revealed God through the name that governs the world.
והוא שם שדי שהוא חיותו ית' לכל הנבראים שנקודה חיות ממנו ית' מחי' כל העולמות.
This is the Name Shaddai, His vitality for all beings, by which a point of life from Him animates all worlds.
“Shaddai” is the divine flow that sustains creation with an inner spark.
ואף הטבע נמשך מחיות נקודה הפנימיות שלמעלה מהטבע.
Even nature draws from this inner point of vitality that is above nature.
The natural order is rooted in a super‑natural essence.
ומרע"ה הי' דבוק במה שלמעלה מהטבע.
And Moses was attached to what is above nature.
His consciousness remained fixed in the divine infinite.
והוא שם הוי' ית' שאין סוף לגדולתו.
This is the Name Havayah, whose greatness is without end.
Moses related to the boundless divine name.
אבל בחי' נקודה הנ"ל היא המשכה שתהי' מספקת ליתן חיות לכל דבר ודבר כפי משפטו.
But the above-mentioned point is the flow that provides life to each thing according to its measure.
The “point” of Shaddai distributes life in a proportion suited to each creation.
ולכך נקרא [שדי] ע"ש שיש די באלקותו לכל ברי'.
Thus it is called Shaddai because His divinity is sufficient for every creature.
Its meaning is that God supplies enough vitality for all.
והיא עבודת אבותינו לברר בטבע והחושך שמ"מ נמשך הכל מנקודה הפנימיות ושהכל לכבודו ברא.
This was the work of our forefathers: to clarify within nature and darkness that everything flows from the inner point and is created for His glory.
The Patriarchs revealed holiness from within worldly obscurity.
ונאמר זה למרע"ה עתה.
And this was now said to Moses.
Moses had to learn that redemption requires this mode of service.
כי זה ענין הגלות לברר אלקותו ית' גם במקומות השפלים תוך כל המצרים והסתרות.
For this is the nature of exile: to clarify God’s divinity even in low places, within all constraints and concealments.
Exile trains us to uncover God within darkness.
אעפ"כ יתגלה ע"י עבודת האדם שהכל נמשך ממנו ית'.
Yet through human effort it becomes revealed that everything flows from Him.
Our actions draw out the hidden divine source.
ועבודת האבות הי' הכנה להגאולה של כל גלות וגלות.
The work of the Patriarchs prepared for the redemption of every exile.
Their service laid the foundation for future deliverance.
ולזה עצמו הי' קשה השליחות למרע"ה כי הי' למעלה מהטבע.
This is why the mission was difficult for Moses, for he was above nature.
Being transcendent, he struggled to engage the world’s limitations.
ושליחות זה הי' להמשיך הארה לבנ"י כמו שהי' תוך הגלות.
And this mission was to draw light to Israel as they were in exile.
He had to bring divine illumination into their constrained state.
וכ' ולא שמעו מקוצר רוח.
And it says: “They did not listen because of shortness of breath.”
They were unable to receive Moses’ message.
ג"כ הפי' כנ"ל כי כ' ויפח באפיו נשמת חיים.
This too means, as above, for it is written: “He breathed into him a living soul.”
Every Jew possesses divine breath within.
שיש בכל איש ישראל רוח ונשמה ממנו ית'.
There is in every Jew a spirit and soul from Him.
An inner divine life-force is present in each person.
וצריך להיות נמשך כל האדם וכל המעשים אחר פנימיות החיות.
The whole person and all actions must follow this inner vitality.
One must live aligned with the soul’s inner light.
ואם נפסק החיות שעושה מעשה גשמיים בלי חיות פנימיות זה מקוצר רוח.
If the vitality is cut off and one acts physically without inner life, that is shortness of breath.
This is spiritual suffocation, the essence of exile.
כי זה הי' הגלות לבטל אמונה הנ"ל.
For this was the exile: to nullify this faith.
Exile sought to obstruct awareness of inner divine life.
שלא יוכלו לברר אצלם להיות נמשך הכל אחר חיות הפנימיות.
So they could not clarify within themselves to follow the inner vitality.
They struggled to sense the divine spark guiding all.
וז"ש מרע"ה הן בנ"י ל"ש.
Thus Moses said: “Behold, the Israelites did not listen.”
He realized they lacked the inner readiness for redemption.
כי ידע כי לא יוכל להיות כל הגאולה עד שיהי' מבורר האמונה אצל בנ"י מקודם.
For he knew that redemption cannot come until faith is clarified among Israel first.
Spiritual preparation precedes physical deliverance.
ועי"ז יהי' מוכרח להתגלות הקדושה ולבטל כל ההסתר.
Through this, holiness will be revealed and all concealment nullified.
Once faith is restored, divine light inevitably breaks through.
וכ"כ בזוה"ק שהדיבור הי' בגלות.
And the Zohar says that speech was in exile.
The capacity to reveal inner divine meaning was constricted.
כי בעשרה מאמרות נברא העולם.
For the world was created with ten utterances.
The structure of creation begins with divine speech.
ונעשה מהם עשרת הדברות באמצעות גלות מצרים ועשר מכות.
And these became the Ten Commandments through the exile in Egypt and the ten plagues.
Redemption transformed creation-speech into covenant-speech.
ופי' ההפרש בין אמירה לדיבור הוא כנ"ל להיות ניכר ומתגלה חיות הפנימיות.
The difference between “saying” and “speaking” is that speech reveals inner vitality.
Dibur expresses the hidden divine life more clearly than amirah.
ודיבור מלשון הנהגה.
And speech means guidance.
Dibur directs and governs reality.
ובגלות אין ניכר כבודו ית'.
And in exile His glory is not apparent.
Divine kingship is obscured.
ופרעה אמר לי יאורי.
And Pharaoh said: “The Nile is mine.”
He denied divine sovereignty.
וז"ש הן בנ"י ל"ש ואיך ישמעני פרעה.
Thus he said: “If Israel won’t listen, how will Pharaoh listen?”
Moses perceived that without inner awakening among Israel, even the nations would not be moved.
Summary: The Sefat Emet contrasts Moses’ transcendent connection to Havayah with the Patriarchs’ service within nature through the name Shaddai. Redemption requires revealing God within concealment, restoring inner divine vitality to the people, and transforming creation-speech into covenant-speech. Only when Israel reconnects to the inner point can holiness break through exile.
