Finding Holy Sparks in Nature

Vaeira · תרל"ד (1873) · Essay 1

“And I appeared… but by My name Y‑H‑V‑H I was not known…”

The Sefat Emet begins by explaining that the revelation of the Divine Name develops across generations, with the Patriarchs accessing only certain aspects.

For the Patriarchs, all their service was on behalf of the Children of Israel; therefore they are called “Patriarchs,” and they traversed all the hidden places within nature.

The Patriarchs prepared spiritual pathways for all Israel by uncovering sparks of holiness even within concealed layers of nature.

They labored until they found there as well the holy illumination.

Through great effort, they revealed holiness even in the most obscured realms.

This aspect is the mode of governance associated with the Name El Shaddai.

This divine aspect refers to God’s sustaining presence embedded within creation.

As our sages said: His divinity suffices for every creature.

El Shaddai denotes the suffusing divine vitality that sustains all beings.

Meaning that the Blessed One placed in every thing a point of divine life.

Each created thing contains a spark of divine vitality.

So that all surrounding elements might be drawn toward that point.

This inner spark is meant to attract and elevate what surrounds it.

For in this world, called the “world of falsehood,” much falsehood surrounds every point of truth.

Truth in this world is hidden and obscured by layers of illusion.

As it is written: “Around the wicked they walk.”

The wicked encircle the point of truth, seeking to conceal it.

And about this it is said: “Save my soul from lying lips.”

The psalmist prays to escape the layers of false speech that obscure truth.

For around every point of truth, falsehood encircles on every side.

This encapsulates the spiritual challenge of this world.

Yet through effort we can find a point of truth everywhere.

Human striving can uncover holiness even in low places.

This was the labor of the Patriarchs.

Their spiritual mission was to extract truth from hiddenness.

Therefore it says: “The land of their sojournings, in which they sojourned.”

Their wanderings were purposeful spiritual work.

From the expression “sojourner.”

Meaning they were not bound to worldly concealment.

As it is said: Abraham converted converts, etc.

The Patriarchs drew others toward divine truth.

Meaning a language of drawing, for they drew all things back to their root.

Their work uplifted creation to its spiritual source.

And in the Egyptian exile, and in every exile, this same aspect applies.

Exile too involves uncovering hidden divine sparks.

And the merit of the Patriarchs supports this.

Their earlier work enables Israel to endure exile.

It is taught: Moses saw through a clear speculum, and other prophets through a clouded one.

Moses experienced a uniquely direct revelation.

And why call it a speculum if it is not clear?

The term indicates a medium of revelation even amid concealment.

The meaning is that there is concealment of the point that reveals itself within concealment.

Revelation can occur precisely through layers of hiddenness.

And Moses merited what will be in the future: “Y‑H‑V‑H and His name will be one.”

Moses attained a unity of divine revelation unequaled in this world.

When nothing will exist but divine life.

The future world will reveal God’s unity without concealment.

But in this world everything is clothed in nature.

Divinity is hidden within natural forms.

And according to a person’s sanctification in worldly matters, he merits to grasp something.

Holiness within daily life opens the door to spiritual insight.

And this aspect is called the clouded speculum: through the concealment one merits revelation.

Hiddenness becomes a medium for divine encounter.

And this is difficult labor.

The spiritual struggle of this world is demanding.

And corresponding to this is the labor of the weekdays.

Weekdays symbolize effort through concealment.

And Shabbat is the clear speculum.

Shabbat reveals what weekdays only hint at.

For on Shabbat there is greater revelation for every Jewish soul.

Shabbat bestows clarity and spiritual illumination.

It is true that according to the work in the weekdays, one merits the light of Shabbat.

The effort of the week prepares the vessel for Shabbat’s light.

For in exile one merits truth through faith, as explained elsewhere.

Faith sustains access to truth during concealment.

And I heard from my grandfather and teacher, of blessed memory, “I set sand as a boundary to the sea”—for the weekdays are a boundary limiting the human will so that it not spread beyond its proper bounds.

Weekdays restrain desire, creating the vessel for holiness.

And this is constriction.

Self‑limitation opens the way to divine light.

And according to the measure this point exists within a Jew.

The inner point of holiness varies by individual.

The illumination of truth is revealed to him.

Divine truth emerges to the extent one cultivates the inner point.

Summary: The Sefat Emet explains that the Patriarchs revealed hidden divine sparks within nature, enabling Israel to continue this work in exile. Revelation comes through both concealment and clarity, symbolized by weekdays and Shabbat. The degree of inner holiness determines the measure of divine truth one can perceive.
