Heavenly Aid Beyond Self

Vaeira · תרל"ז (1876) · Essay 2

“In the Midrash: What (God said) that he will come, they have already done… Solomon, who sought to outsmart the decree… the yod of ‘yarbeh’ arose.”

The Midrash teaches that King Solomon attempted to override a divine decree, and the letter yod protested this disturbance of divine order.

The explanation: we see that the yod needed to plead before God.

This emphasizes that even a single letter embodies divine truth and reacts when that truth is threatened.

This implies that it was within Solomon’s power that his heart not turn astray, as it says: “Come with me and eat.”

The Sefat Emet suggests Solomon believed he had inner strength sufficient to resist the spiritual dangers forewarned by the Torah.

But this was not due to his own deeds in essence.

Whatever spiritual stability he had was not inherent but granted from above.

For surely the word of God is alive and enduring.

Divine decrees are immutable, regardless of human wisdom.

For if he multiplies wives, they will turn his heart.

The Torah’s warning is absolute, not conditional on personal greatness.

But Solomon, owing to his righteousness, attained many levels and received additional strength from Heaven.

His spiritual achievements granted him temporary heavenly assistance beyond normal human capacity.

For such is the way of the Creator.

God increases heavenly aid according to a person’s service.

According to a person’s service, additional strength is given from Heaven.

Divine assistance rises in proportion to human effort.

And this is the meaning of “Come with me and eat.”

Solomon interpreted this as a sign of his own power, rather than a gift from above.

He erred by attributing everything to himself, and therefore he failed.

His downfall came from spiritual overconfidence.

Thus “the yod arose,” which refers to thought.

The letter represents the higher wisdom that departed from him.

Meaning: the power of his wisdom rose from him.

He lost the divine component of wisdom sustaining him.

And with the withdrawal of heavenly assistance it was said of him: “His wives turned [his heart].”

Once the divine help was gone, the Torah’s decree took effect.

And Moses, who was the most humble, regarded it as simple that all Israel could attain his level.

Moses’ humility led him to assume others shared his spiritual access.

Therefore he said: “Why have You done evil?”

He questioned God because he did not consider his path uniquely elevated.

But he should have known that the order of the forefathers’ service preceded.

The spiritual foundation of the patriarchs was necessary before Moses’ level could exist.

And even Moses’ level could not have existed without the prior service of the forefathers.

Moses depended on the spiritual groundwork they laid.

And therefore Israel must engage in this service to repair the mixture of good and evil in the world, as stated above.

The mission of Israel is to complete the rectification begun by the patriarchs.

The Sefat Emet explains that Solomon’s downfall came from misattributing divine assistance to his own power, while Moses’ humility led to a different misunderstanding. Both teach that spiritual attainment depends on prior generations and on ongoing divine support.
