Redemption Widening the Inner Self
“In the verse: ‘So that the Torah of God shall be in your mouth.’”
The Sefat Emet begins by noting that the verse frames the purpose of the mitzvah as enabling God’s Torah to be expressed through one’s mouth.
“Scripture makes the Torah dependent on the Exodus from Egypt.”
He explains that Torah and the experience of redemption are intrinsically linked; the ability to receive Torah arises from liberation.
“And so it was in practice: they did not receive the Torah until after the Exodus, and thus it is for all generations.”
The historical pattern becomes a spiritual law: first redemption, then Torah—this applies perpetually.
“According to how much one awakens the aspect of the Exodus, one merits Torah.”
The inner reenactment of liberation determines one’s capacity to receive divine wisdom.
“Therefore we precede the remembrance of Egypt before Shema each day, for Shema is the essence of Torah—‘and you shall speak them.’”
Daily liturgy mirrors the spiritual sequence: remembrance of Exodus awakens the inner freedom needed for true speech of Torah.
“And the matter is that the main power of the mouth is to bring forth true words, as it is said: ‘They are life to those who bring them out.’”
The Sefat Emet emphasizes that verbalizing Torah is a life‑giving act, requiring purity and inner openness.
“And one cannot bring forth such words until one has been released from constriction and the blockage of inner expansion, for this is the essential meaning of ‘Mitzrayim’—the opposite of spaciousness.”
Egypt symbolizes inner constriction; true speech cannot emerge until the soul regains spaciousness and freedom.
“And in Egypt were included all forms of constriction; therefore, through remembering the Exodus, the power of redemption is awakened in every type of constriction, for all was encompassed then in the Exodus, as stated above.”
Because the Exodus contained the root of all future redemptions, remembering it activates liberation from any inner or outer limitation.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that Torah can only be received through inner liberation. Remembering the Exodus awakens this freedom, enabling true speech of Torah and expanding the soul beyond its constrictions.
