Concealment Serving Divine Glory

Bo · תרל"ט (1878) · Essay 1

In the Midrash: “For I have hardened [his heart], He said to him.”

The Sefat Emet begins by invoking the Midrash that comments on God’s declaration that He hardened Pharaoh’s heart.

“The weight of a stone… the anger of a fool is heavier…”

These verses are cited to convey the idea of heaviness as resistance, illustrating the difficulty and obstinacy connected to Pharaoh’s hardened heart.

The explanation: It is an even greater wonder that the Creator grants the wicked the ability to act against His will.

The Sefat Emet emphasizes the astonishing notion that God empowers even those who oppose His divine intention.

And God glorifies Himself through this power: “For I have hardened…”

God’s self‑description expresses that even the opposition of the wicked ultimately serves His purpose.

For the creation of the world is no wonder, for He is omnipotent.

Creation itself reveals God’s power, but not His paradoxical ability to allow resistance to His will.

And from this we understand His might, in that He gives a hand to sinners, and this is called “effort,” so to speak, when they act against His will.

The Sefat Emet notes that enabling sinners involves a divine “exertion,” expressing the profound tension between divine will and human choice.

And for this reason God is called a “humiliated King.”

This title means that God endures human rebellion while continuing to sustain the world.

And this is to strengthen the hearts of Israel, to know that every concealment, both general and personal, comes from the Creator and for His glory.

Every spiritual obscurity a Jew experiences is ultimately rooted in God and serves divine purpose.

Therefore, one should not lose heart upon seeing the power and schemes of the evil inclination, for though they are many, they all come from the Awesome One of deeds.

The Sefat Emet reassures that even inner struggles are part of God’s design.

And this is the meaning of “Come… for I have hardened.”

The hardening of Pharaoh’s heart exemplifies that God controls even opposition.

And He strengthened the heart of Moses by showing that through all these matters God’s glory would increase.

The many events of the Exodus were meant to reveal greater divine honor.

And that from this would come portions of the Torah, as it says: “So that you may tell in the ears of your son…”

The miracles of Egypt became foundational teachings for future generations.

And although the Creator could have taken them out with a single plague…

God could have redeemed Israel instantly, yet He chose not to.

This is like the teaching that the world was created with ten utterances—though it could have been created with one—to punish the wicked and reward the righteous.

The multiplicity serves moral and spiritual purposes.

So too here: God showed His love for Israel by engaging in their redemption through the lengthy process of ten plagues, punishing those who afflicted them and rewarding those who sustain and strengthen Israel’s faith.

The drawn‑out redemption served to magnify Israel’s worth and reveal divine justice.

And likewise for every Jewish soul, to know how great is the power of the collective of Israel, and to nullify oneself to the whole.

Each person must connect to the collective soul of Israel.

And the Exodus from Egypt was a preparation for the four exiles; therefore there are four expressions of redemption.

The structure of redemption corresponds to future historical challenges.

And thus the redemption came through ten plagues to prepare for all types of troubles, for “ten” includes everything.

The ten plagues symbolically encompassed all possible future afflictions.

And this is “So that you may tell in the ears of your son and your son’s son…”

The transmission of these events is foundational for all generations.

For it is the root of redemption for all future generations, as explained above.

The Exodus sets the template for every redemption that will ever occur.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that God’s hardening of Pharaoh’s heart reveals divine might in allowing opposition, strengthening Israel’s understanding that all concealment and struggle serve God’s glory. The extended process of the ten plagues expresses God’s love for Israel, prepares future redemptions, and teaches each Jew the power of connecting to the collective soul of Israel.
