Renewal Through Torah Revelation
במדרש כובד אבן כו' אלו ישראל כו'.
“In the Midrash: ‘The weight of a stone…’—these are Israel.”
The Sefat Emet begins by citing the Midrash, which identifies Israel with the ‘weight of a stone,’ meaning a people possessing spiritual substance capable of tipping the scales of creation.
ע"פ המשנה בעשרה מאמרות נה"ע כו' לתת שכר טוב לצדיקים כו'.
“Based on the Mishnah: ‘With ten utterances the world was created… in order to give good reward to the righteous.’”
The world’s structure, according to the Sages, was intentionally designed to enable the righteous to receive divine reward by aligning themselves with the purpose of creation.
והנה כ"ז הסדר נתקיים שהקב"ה ברא העולם בבחי' הצימצום כמ"ש שאמר לעולמו די.
“And behold, this whole order was fulfilled: God created the world through the aspect of tzimtzum, as it is said that He told His world ‘Enough.’”
The Sefat Emet emphasizes that creation occurred through contraction, limiting divine revelation so the world could exist as an independent arena.
וזה הי' עבודת האבות שביררו כבודו ית' בעולם.
“This was the labor of the Patriarchs, who clarified God’s glory in the world.”
The ancestors worked to reveal holiness within a concealed world, gradually reversing the effects of tzimtzum.
והרשעים מאבדין את העולם שנברא בע"מ.
“But the wicked destroy the world, which was created with a purpose.”
The wicked undermine the intended revelation by deepening concealment and misusing creation.
פי' כח הטבע זה באופן שהוא נסתר כאשר פי' מו"ז ז"ל כי העולם נק' ע"ש ההעלם שאינו בהתגלות.
“Meaning: the force of nature is inherently hidden, as my grandfather explained, for the world is named from the word ‘concealment,’ since it is not in a state of revelation.”
Nature itself conceals divinity; the very term ‘world’ (olam) implies hiddenness.
ומכוסה בהטבע.
“And it is covered by nature.”
The layers of natural law obscure the divine light even further.
והנה בוודאי בהתגלות כבוד שמו ית' אין מגע נכרי והוא התורה שנק' חירות והוא שם הוי' ב"ה מדרגת מרע"ה.
“But surely, in the revelation of God’s glory there is no foreign intrusion; and this is the Torah, called ‘freedom,’ which corresponds to the Name Havayah—the level of Moses.”
Torah represents unmediated divine revelation, untouched by concealment or external influence.
וע"י הרשעים שמאבדין העולם כו' לכן הוצרכו בנ"י להמשיך דרך חדש התגלות שמו ית' בחי' התורה והוא ההתחדשות דכ' החודש הזה לכם.
“And because the wicked destroy the world… Israel needed to draw down a new path—a revelation of God’s Name through Torah, which is the renewal expressed in ‘This month shall be for you.’”
Egypt’s corruption forced Israel to open a new channel of divine revelation—Torah as continual renewal.
וממילא כשיש התחדשות הוא דביקות בהמקור בלי צימצום.
“And naturally, renewal brings cleaving to the Source without tzimtzum.”
Spiritual renewal reconnects one to the infinite root beyond contraction.
וזה לתת שכר טוב לצדיקים שהוא דרך התורה שנק' טוב.
“And this is to give good reward to the righteous—the path of Torah, which is called ‘good.’”
The divine reward is the experience of Torah itself, the ultimate good.
וע"ז כ' וימנע מרשעים אורם.
“And regarding this it is written: ‘He withholds their light from the wicked.’”
The wicked lose access to divine light when it becomes revealed rather than hidden.
פי' שמקודם הי' אור נסתר בהטבע והיו יכולין להנות גם האומות.
“Meaning: formerly the light was hidden within nature and even the nations could benefit from it.”
In a concealed world, divine energy is distributed universally.
וע"י רשעתם נבדלו בנ"י מהם.
“But through their wickedness, Israel became separated from them.”
The nations’ misuse of divine concealment created a spiritual divide.
וניתן להם דרך חדש.
“And a new path was given to Israel.”
Israel now accesses revelation directly through Torah.
וממילא נתרחקו ביותר.
“And naturally, they became even more distant.”
The more revealed the divine light, the greater the gap between Israel and the nations.
וז"ש כובד אבן כו'.
“And this is the meaning of ‘the weight of a stone…’”
Israel’s spiritual gravity becomes fully manifest only after divine revelation intensifies.
כי עם היות שבנ"י עלו במחשבה קודם הבריאה והכל בעבורם.
“For although Israel arose in thought before creation and everything was for their sake…”
Israel’s spiritual precedence existed conceptually from the start.
עכ"ז לא יצא מכח אל הפועל בחירת בנ"י בהתגלות.
“Nevertheless, Israel’s chosen status did not emerge into actuality in revelation…”
Their role was not yet visible in the world.
רק ע"י כעס אויל הוכרחו הרשעים לימנע מהם אורם כנ"ל.
“Except through the anger of the fool—the wicked were forced to lose their light, as above.”
The wicked’s own actions brought about the shift to revealed divine favor toward Israel.
וזה עיקר יצ"מ שתלה בו הכ' כל התורה והמצות כמ"ש אנכי ה"א אשר הוצאתיך.
“And this is the essence of the Exodus, upon which Scripture bases all Torah and mitzvot, as it says: ‘I am the Lord your God Who brought you out…’”
The Exodus inaugurates the era of revelation that defines the entire Torah.
ולא אשר בראתיך.
“And not: ‘Who created you.’”
Creation is associated with concealment; the Exodus with revelation.
כי בחי' הבריאה בצימצום ומצרים וגבולים.
“For the aspect of creation is contraction—Egypt—boundaries.”
Creation’s nature is limitation, symbolized by Egypt.
אבל בנ"י יצאו מזה הדרך להיות להם דביקות בשם הוי' ב"ה וב"ש שהוא בלי גבול.
“But Israel left that mode, attaining cleaving to the Name Havayah… which is without limit.”
Israel transcended creation-bound limitations.
ובלי מצרים נחלה.
“An inheritance without Egypt—without constriction.”
Their spiritual inheritance is limitless.
ולכן אומרים ויוצא את עמו ישראל מתוכם לחירות עולם שהיא בחי' התורה שנק' חירות.
“Therefore we say: ‘He brought His people Israel out from among them to eternal freedom,’ which is the aspect of Torah, called freedom.”
The ultimate freedom is Torah, the state beyond all limitation.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that creation began with concealment, but the Exodus initiated a new mode of direct divine revelation through Torah. Israel’s role became visible only when the nations forfeited access to the hidden light. Torah, as continual renewal, reconnects Israel to the infinite Source beyond all boundaries.
