Elevating Holy Sparks Upward
בפסוק דבר נא כו' וישאלו כו' כלי כסף כו' ובנ"י עשו כדבר משה כו'.
“In the verse: ‘Speak, please… and they shall request… vessels of silver…’ and the Children of Israel acted according to the word of Moses.”
The Sefat Emet opens by noting that Israel’s request for Egyptian vessels fulfilled a divine intention tied to the Exodus.
כדי שלא יאמר אותו צדיק ועבדום קיים בהם כו'.
“In order that that righteous one (Abraham) should not say: ‘He fulfilled in them the slavery…’”
This act ensured that God also fulfilled the promise of leaving with great wealth, not only the decree of servitude.
להבין הענין כי ידוע שבנ"י העלו ממצרים ניצוצות קדושות שהי' נמצא שם כדכ' כגן ה' כארץ מצרים.
“To understand the matter: it is known that Israel elevated from Egypt holy sparks that were found there, as it is written: ‘Like the garden of God, like the land of Egypt.’”
The wealth taken from Egypt symbolizes the spiritual sparks embedded within the land.
וכן מצינו בהאבות שירדו מקודם למצרים ונחשב להם לשבח שעלו משם כדאיתא בזוה"ק שאדם ונח לא עמדו בכח זה כאבות דכ' בהם עלי' ממצרים.
“So we find with the Patriarchs who earlier descended to Egypt, and it was considered a praise that they ascended from there; as the Zohar says, Adam and Noah lacked this power, unlike the Patriarchs about whom ‘ascent from Egypt’ is written.”
The Patriarchs pioneered the spiritual ascent from Egypt—an ability earlier generations lacked.
וכן בבני ישראל כ' ויעלו ממצרים.
“And likewise regarding Israel it is written: ‘And they went up from Egypt.’”
The nation continued the ancestral task of spiritual elevation.
וגם ערב רב עלו הוא התערובות שהי' מעורב במצרים הארות רבות מהקדושה.
“And also the mixed multitude ascended—this mixture contained many lights of holiness present in Egypt.”
The ‘mixed multitude’ embodied additional sparks requiring extraction.
וע"ז רמז הקב"ה ליעקב אע"ה אעלך גם עלה.
“Concerning this God hinted to Jacob: ‘I will also surely bring you up.’”
God promised Jacob participation in this cosmic elevation.
וזהו הרכוש גדול.
“And this is the ‘great wealth.’”
The true wealth is spiritual—redeemed sparks, not material goods alone.
אכן וודאי מדרגות בנ"י כאשר יצאו ממצרים הי' למעלה מאוד שזכו לקבל עשרת הדברות ונתרוממו כמלאכי השרת ושראתה שפחה על הים מה שלא ראו נביאים.
“Indeed, Israel’s level upon leaving Egypt was exceedingly high—they merited the Ten Commandments, were elevated like angels, and even a maidservant saw at the sea what prophets never saw.”
The Exodus refined Israel to a nearly angelic state.
ולא הי' בהם הגשמיות.
“There was no physicality in them.”
This elevation transcended material limitation.
וידוע כי לכל הארה יש התלבשות כמו התלבשות הנשמה בגוף וכפי התרוממות הנשמה כך המלבוש.
“It is known that every illumination requires a garment, like the soul’s clothing in the body; and according to the soul’s elevation, so is its garment.”
Spiritual light needs a vessel appropriate to its level.
ולכן הוצרכו בנ"י להוריד עצמם להתקרב אל הגשמיות כדי לקבל ההארות ממצרים.
“Therefore Israel had to lower themselves and approach physicality in order to receive the illuminations from Egypt.”
They briefly descended so they could properly elevate the sparks.
וזה ענין שאלת הכלים ממצרים.
“And this is the matter of requesting the vessels from Egypt.”
The vessels were spiritual containers for the redeemed light.
והכל הי' לקיים ההבטחה לאברהם אע"ה ראשון לגרים שהי' כל רצונו לקרב כל הברואים אליו ית'.
“And all this fulfilled the promise to Abraham, the first of converts, whose entire desire was to draw all creatures near to God.”
Abraham’s universal mission lay behind the extraction of sparks.
הבטיחו הש"י כי בהיות שבנ"י יתרוממו ט). עכ"ז יעלו שאר הניצוצות ג"כ על ידם.
“God promised him that when Israel elevated themselves, the remaining sparks would also ascend through them.”
Israel’s rise enables the rise of all creation.
ובאמת מצינו שבאו אח"כ לחטא ע"י הערב רב הנ"ל כמ"ש ודי זהב.
“Indeed we find that they later came to sin through the mixed multitude, as it is said: ‘And with much gold.’”
The sparks mixed with impurity created spiritual danger.
וכסף וזהב הרביתי להם כו' שהוא רמז על הנ"ל.
“‘Silver and gold I multiplied for them’—this alludes to the above.”
Abundance carried risk when sourced from impure realms.
ע"י שבאו ההארות ממקום טמא. הי' צריך עבודה גדולה לתקן אותם ולצרפם צירוף אחר צירוף.
“Because the illuminations came from an impure place, great labor was needed to refine them—refinement after refinement.”
The spiritual work was long and demanding.
אכן וודאי יתוקן הכל בעזר השם ית' עד גאולה העתידה וזה השבח שעשו כדבר משה.
“But surely everything will be rectified with God’s help until the future redemption—and this is the praise that they acted according to the word of Moses.”
Their obedience enabled the long‑term process of universal repair.
וזה נק' תכשיטין וכמ"ש תורי זהב נעשה כו'.
“And this is called ‘ornaments,’ as in: ‘Rows of gold we will make…’”
These refinements become spiritual adornments.
שמה שתיקנו חוץ מתיקון עצמותם.
“For what they rectified beyond rectifying themselves…”
They repaired not only their own souls.
רק כדי להגבי' כל האורות שירדו למטה להעלותם בכוחם.
“Was only to elevate all the lights that had descended below, raising them through their power.”
Their task was cosmic elevation.
זה נק' תכשיטים שחוץ מיופי העצם שלהם.
“This is called ‘ornaments’—beyond their own inherent beauty.”
The added beauty comes from lifting the world with them.
The Sefat Emet teaches that Israel’s taking Egyptian vessels reflects the spiritual extraction of holy sparks; Israel ascended greatly, yet had to temporarily descend to elevate these sparks, fulfilling Abraham’s mission and contributing to the ultimate redemption.
