Unity Within Counted Multiplicity

Pekudei · תרל"א (1870) · Essay 2

“And in the Midrash on Pekudei: ‘A man of faith increases blessings,’ etc.”

The Sefat Emet cites the Midrash, which teaches that a person of faith becomes a conduit for abundant blessing.

“It comes to explain that in counting, blessing does not take hold.”

The act of numbering creates limitation, which prevents divine increase from flowing naturally.

“And the answer is also written in the Zohar: since it was done according to Moses, there was blessing even within the counting.”

Moses’ unique spiritual clarity enables divine abundance to enter even a domain normally closed to blessing.

“And the matter is that all multiplicity belongs below, as written in Sefer HaYashar, that whoever draws close to holiness diminishes and becomes one (see Gate 11).”

True holiness is unity; as one approaches it, ego and separateness fall away, returning the soul to oneness.

“But through proper faith—meaning faith as being drawn after the root, the place of unity—even while one stands in a place of separation, the higher light is automatically drawn even into counting and multiplicity, as above.”

Faith is the bond that connects the lower world of fragmentation to its source; through it, divine unity flows into the realm of number and differentiation.

“And this is the entire matter of the Mishkan: to draw down higher illumination even into work and action.”

The Mishkan embodies the possibility of infusing daily labor and physical tasks with transcendent divine light.

“And therefore it was erected on Rosh Chodesh Nisan, as above: ‘This month shall be for you,’ and through Moses, the clear speculum—this aspect of ‘This month’ was revealed, as explained.”

The Mishkan’s inauguration aligns with the revelation of renewed light in Nisan, revealed through Moses’ unique prophetic clarity.

Summary: Blessing cannot rest upon counting unless the act is rooted in Moses-like faith and clarity, which draws divine unity into multiplicity. This is the essence of the Mishkan: channeling higher illumination into the realm of action.
