Fear and Divine Revelation

במדרש אילולי שהסתיר פניו הי' מראה לו מה למעלה כו'.

“In the Midrash: Were it not that he hid his face, He would have shown him what is above…”

The Midrash teaches that Moses could have been shown the highest revelations, had he not concealed his face.

אעפ"כ בשכר ויסתר כו' זכה לתמונת ה' יביט.

“Nevertheless, as a reward for ‘and he hid [his face],’ he merited ‘the likeness of God he beholds.’”

Moses’ act of modesty and awe ultimately earned him an even greater vision.

פי' כי בוודאי גם מרע"ה ידע זאת כי הי' מראה לו כו'.

“This means that certainly Moses our teacher already knew this, for He had been showing him…”

Moses was aware of the possibility of immense revelation and had previously experienced it.

וכל אלה ההשגות הניח בעבור להסתיר פניו בשביל יראת ה'.

“And he set aside all these perceptions in order to hide his face out of awe of God.”

Moses chose reverence over expanded mystical knowledge.

ולכן השיג בשכר יראה זאת תמונת ה' יביט.

“Therefore, as a reward for this awe, he attained ‘the likeness of God he beholds.’”

His restraint became the source of a later, deeper vision.

והטעם כי מעט אשר משיג אדם בזכות מעשיו.

“The reason is that the little a person attains through his own merit…”

Attainments earned through one’s own actions have special weight.

שקול נגד הרבה השגות הבאין לאדם במתנה.

“Is equal to many attainments that come to a person as a gift.”

Self‑earned spiritual growth surpasses even abundant unearned revelation.

ודבר הבא בעבודת האדם הוא קיים לעד.

“And that which comes through a person’s own service endures forever.”

What is gained through personal effort is lasting and permanent.

ועל ענין זה נאמר יראו את ה' קדושיו כי אין מחסור ליראיו:

“And regarding this it is said: ‘Fear the Lord, His holy ones, for there is no lack for those who fear Him.’”

Those who choose awe and humility lack nothing, for their achievements endure.
