Ner Mitzvah Versus Torah Or
Parshas Tetzaveh is dedicated to Aharon HaKohen, the aspect of "ner mitzvah" (the lamp of the mitzvah).
The Sefas Emes assigns this parsha, with its focus on Aharon and the menorah, to the quality of "the mitzvah is a lamp."
And Moshe Rabbeinu, peace be upon him, is the aspect of "Torah is light."
Moshe corresponds to the Torah itself, the source light, while Aharon corresponds to the lamp of the mitzvos.
And we say, "In the light of Your face You gave us... a Torah of life and a love of kindness" (from the Amidah).
These two gifts — "Torah of life" and "love of chesed" — map onto Moshe and Aharon.
And these are the aspects of Moshe and Aharon, for the mitzvos were given to refine a person and so that he would find favor and kindness before Him, may He be blessed.
"Torah of life" is Moshe; "love of chesed" is Aharon — the mitzvos refine a person and win him chein before Hashem.
As it is written, "for they are a garland of grace (livyas chein)," etc. (Mishlei 1:9).
Torah and mitzvos adorn a person with grace, like a beautiful garland.
And this is "the love of chesed."
That grace and favor is the dimension of "ahavas chesed" associated with Aharon.
Now, the root of all the mitzvos is in the Torah.
Every mitzvah ultimately draws from the supernal light of the Torah.
But the radiance of the Torah is clothed in the physical mitzvos before us.
The Torah's spiritual light is "dressed" in concrete, physical mitzvah-acts that we can perform.
For through this, the root of the mitzvah above is awakened.
Performing the physical mitzvah arouses its supernal root in the upper worlds.
And if we were drawn after the conduct of Moshe Rabbeinu, peace be upon him, in perfection, we would fulfill the mitzvos on a higher plane.
Were we fully on Moshe's level, we would keep the mitzvos as pure Torah-light rather than only as physical acts.
As it was before the sin, when we placed "na'aseh" (we will do) before "nishma" (we will hear).
Before the Eigel, Bnei Yisrael's "na'aseh v'nishma" reflected angelic readiness to act on Hashem's will.
As Chazal said, "doers of His word" — like the ministering angels who fulfill His will, may He be blessed, and feel within themselves the will of the Creator.
The malachim perform mitzvos by sensing Hashem's ratzon directly within themselves, without need for an external command.
As it is written, "His ministers who do His will" (Tehillim 103:21).
This is the ideal level — to "do His will" as one's own inner desire.
And therefore they said in the Midrash, when it was said to Moshe Rabbeinu, "Bring near... Aharon," it grieved him.
The Midrash relates that Moshe was pained when told to install Aharon, rather than himself, in the Kehunah.
This means that he saw that the Kehunah was taken from him because the aspect of "na'aseh" had not been rectified as it should — to be actual Torah.
Moshe understood that because the nation's "na'aseh" was damaged by the Eigel, the higher avodah of pure Torah-light was not available, so the Kehunah went to Aharon's path of the lamp.
Only through the aspect of "ner mitzvah," as above.
The remaining avenue of avodah was Aharon's — the mitzvah-as-lamp rather than Torah-as-light.
And this is what they hinted, that his name is not mentioned in this parsha, since he said, "Erase me now from Your book" (Shemos 32:32).
Moshe's absent name in Tetzaveh connects to his plea after the Eigel to be "erased" — a self-sacrifice tied to the sin's lasting effect.
For Moshe Rabbeinu immediately understood that if the entire sin were not rectified, they would not be able to follow after his level.
Moshe grasped that without complete repair of the Eigel, the people could not reach his exalted Torah-level of avodah.
And indeed so it was, that the entire sin was not erased, so as to be attached to the "Torah of life" and to the Eitz HaChaim.
The sin was not fully wiped out, so the nation could not cling to the highest level of Toras chaim and the Tree of Life.
And the drawing-close came about through the power of "ahavas chesed."
Instead, closeness to Hashem was achieved through Aharon's path of loving-kindness and grace.
And this is the ornaments and the priestly garments, which hint at the refinement of the body, which is the garment.
The bigdei kehunah symbolize refining the physical "garment" of the body so it can find favor — an avodah of the outer self.
And this is also hinted in the Midrash, that the king was angry with the queen, and nevertheless he commanded that ornaments be made for her, etc.
The mashal: even after the "anger" of the Eigel, Hashem still commanded "ornaments" — the priestly garments — for His beloved nation.
This means that she would find favor in his eyes by means of the ornaments.
The garments restore the nation's chein before Hashem after the rift.
Which had not been needed beforehand.
Before the sin, no such external "ornaments" were necessary, because the inner bond was intact.
And this is also the matter of the remembrance of the names of the shevatim.
The tribal names engraved on the Kohen Gadol's garments belong to this same theme of remembrance and favor.
And this is the aspect of Torah she'be'al peh, for the Avos are the Merkavah (Chariot).
The shevatim and Avos, borne on the Kohen's garments, correspond to Oral Torah — the living, embodied transmission, since the Avos themselves are a Merkavah for the Shechinah.
And it is the Written Torah — the Names of the Holy One, blessed is He.
The Written Torah is, in its essence, composed of the Names of Hashem.
And this is the aspect of "this is My Name" (Shemos 3:15).
"Zeh Shemi" — the fixed, eternal Name — corresponds to the unchanging Written Torah.
But "this is My remembrance (zeh zichri)" is the aspect of Torah she'be'al peh.
The companion phrase "zeh zichri" — My remembrance — corresponds to the Oral Torah.
And it changes according to the merit of the generations.
Unlike the fixed Written Torah, the Oral Torah develops and adapts to each generation's level.
And it must serve as a remembrance in a place that requires remembrance.
"Remembrance" is needed precisely where the connection is not automatic and must be actively recalled.
But the Avos require no remembrance, for they are a Merkavah for the Shechinah.
The Avos are so completely bound to Hashem — themselves a Chariot for the Shechinah — that they need no "reminder."
"This is My Name forever" (Shemos 3:15).
Their bond is permanent and unchanging, like the eternal Name itself.
Summary: Tetzaveh belongs to Aharon — "the mitzvah is a lamp" — as Moshe belongs to "Torah is light." Before the Eigel, Bnei Yisrael could have served on Moshe's exalted level of pure Torah, feeling Hashem's ratzon like the malachim. Because the sin was not fully erased, the path of closeness became Aharon's — the "love of chesed," embodied in the priestly garments that refine the body and restore the nation's favor before Hashem, paralleling the relationship of the eternal Written Torah ("zeh Shemi") and the adapting Oral Torah ("zeh zichri").
