Voice and Speech in Prayer
“In the verse ‘I appeared to the Patriarchs as El Shaddai, but My Name Y‑H‑V‑H I did not make known to them.’”
The Sefat Emet opens by addressing the distinction between the Divine Name revealed to the Patriarchs and the inner revelation to Moses.
“For the level of Moses our teacher is the inner dimension, the aspect of the Name Havayah and of the Torah.”
Moses embodies the inner revelation of God and Torah, beyond what the Patriarchs accessed.
“And the Name El Shaddai refers to what the Sages said: that He said to His world ‘enough,’ meaning the extension of the life‑force of Torah into all creation in measure and boundary.”
El Shaddai represents the measured, outward expression of divine vitality within creation.
“And this path was established by the Patriarchs.”
The Patriarchs operated within the measured, worldly revelation of God.
“The principle is that the letters are the life of everything.”
Creation is animated by divine letters—spiritual energies expressed as speech.
“But there are letters of Torah.”
These are the inner, essential divine letters.
“And there are letters of prayer.”
Prayer expresses human ascent toward God, using its own form of letters.
“Therefore the three daily prayers were instituted by the Patriarchs.”
The Patriarchs established prayer aligned with the outer divine revelation they accessed.
“And this is the distinction between voice and speech, as the Zohar says that speech was in exile.”
Voice is inner freedom; speech is constrained expression tied to worldly action.
“For voice is freedom, where the Other Side has no grasp.”
Pure intention or inner cry remains untouched by impurity.
“And speech is to guide all deeds according to the path of Torah.”
Speech shapes action and therefore enters the realm of struggle and refinement.
“And so I heard from my grandfather, of blessed memory, regarding what is written concerning the plagues: ‘Afterward Moses entreated.’”
The Rebbe brings a teaching from the Chiddushei HaRim about Moses' prayers during the plagues.
“And he cried out, etc.”
Moses sometimes prayed verbally and sometimes cried out from inner distress.
“For through the plagues ten expressions of prayer were opened.”
The plagues awakened new spiritual channels for prayer in Israel.
“And all the suffering our ancestors endured in Egypt was in order to bring them to the level of prayer.”
Redemption requires developing the capacity for deep prayer.
“As the Sages said: their cry was beloved before the Blessed One on high.”
God cherishes sincere cries arising from hardship.
“Therefore they were brought back to the sea so they would cry out, as the Midrash says on the verse ‘Let Me hear your voice.’”
The crisis at the Sea was orchestrated to awaken Israel’s prayer.
“And likewise the Exodus occurs every day, and it is a preparation for prayer.”
Daily spiritual liberation opens one’s mouth for prayer.
“Therefore every day a person’s evil inclination intensifies.”
Daily struggle creates the pressure that gives rise to prayer.
“And thus the joining of Redemption to Prayer, for through the Exodus the mouth is opened.”
We link the Exodus to prayer because redemption enables articulate speech.
“And so it is written: ‘For this I have raised you up ... in order that My Name be declared.’”
Even afflictions serve to reveal God’s Name through human prayer.
“For every constriction is in order to merit prayer.”
Spiritual pressure refines the heart and opens the channel of prayer.
“As it is said: ‘From the narrow place I called out.’”
Prayer emerges most powerfully from constriction and need.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that the plagues, exile, and daily struggles all serve to open deeper levels of prayer. The Patriarchs established prayer rooted in the measured divine presence, whereas Moses accessed its inner dimension. Ultimately, constriction itself is a divine tool to awaken the voice and speech of prayer.
