Four Expressions of Redemption

בפסוק והוצאתי כו' וגאלתי כו'.

“In the verse: ‘And I will bring out… and I will redeem…’.”

The Sefat Emet begins by noting the expressions of redemption mentioned in the verse.

הד' לשונות של גאולה שהוא השורש לכל הד' גליות כמ"ש כארבע רוחות פרשתי אתכם.

“The four expressions of redemption are the root of the four exiles, as it is said: ‘I have spread you out to the four winds.’”

The four redemptive phrases correspond to the four historical exiles of Israel.

וכן מבקשין קבץ נדחינו מד' כנפות הארץ.

“And likewise we ask: ‘Gather our scattered from the four corners of the earth.’”

Our prayers mirror this structure by invoking the four directions.

ומסתמא גלות זה האחרון הוא רוח צפון.

“And it is reasonable that this final exile corresponds to the northern wind.”

The Sefat Emet associates the current exile with the symbolic direction of the north.

ולכן אין לו חקר עד התהום.

“Therefore it has no measurable limit, reaching down to the abyss.”

This exile is deep and obscure, difficult to fathom.

ולכן יש לקוות שתהי' עתה הגאולה בשלימות.

“Thus we may hope that now the redemption will be complete.”

Its depth itself implies the possibility of a full and final redemption.

ויקוים רב טובך אשר צפנת ליראיך.

“And ‘the great goodness You have stored away for those who fear You’ will be fulfilled.”

The hidden good preserved by God is destined to be revealed.

והנה בכל הג' נזכר הגאולה מתוך הצרה.

“And behold, in the first three exiles redemption is mentioned as arising from distress.”

The earlier exiles involved suffering that directly triggered redemption.

שהג' גליות היו בחי' ע"ז ג"ע ש"ד.

“For the three exiles corresponded to idolatry, sexual immorality, and bloodshed.”

Each historical exile aligned with a specific spiritual corruption.

וגלות זה הוא שנאת חנם.

“But this exile is caused by baseless hatred.”

The present exile stems from the inner failure of unwarranted division.

וכל הגלות הפיזור.

“And all exile is dispersion.”

Exile fundamentally fragments and separates the people.

לכן כ' רק ולקחתי אתכם לי לעם.

“Therefore regarding this exile it says only: ‘And I will take you to Me as a people.’”

The resolution of this exile focuses on reconnection and unity with God.

שזה עיקר החסרון הלקיחה להיות מיוחדים לעבודתו ית'.

“For the main lack is the ‘taking’—being united in His service.”

What is missing is collective dedication to divine purpose.

כי פי' שנאת חנם הוא חנם מן המצות.

“For the meaning of baseless hatred is being empty of mitzvot.”

Baseless hatred arises when one disconnects from the commandments.

כי אהבת ישראל תלוי בקבלת מלכות שמים כראוי.

“For love of Israel depends upon accepting the yoke of Heaven properly.”

True unity flows from shared commitment to God’s sovereignty.

להיות כל הרצון לעשות רצון אבינו שבשמים.

“That all one’s desire be to do the will of our Father in Heaven.”

Alignment of will leads naturally to mutual love.

ואז כ"א מבקש עבודת חבירו.

“Then each person seeks the service of his fellow.”

People rejoice in one another’s spiritual accomplishments.

כמו מה"ש שנותנים באהבה רשות זה לזה להקדיש ליוצרם.

“Like the ministering angels, who lovingly give permission to one another to sanctify their Creator.”

The angels serve as a model of harmonious, cooperative holiness.

וכמו י' בני אדם עוסקין בעסק א' לא יעלה קנאה ושנאה במה שכ"א מתגבר לעשות בהעסק ככל יכולתו.

“And like ten people engaged in one task: no jealousy or hatred arises when each strives to contribute as much as he can.”

Shared purpose eliminates competition.

ואדרבה כך רצון כ"א וא'.

“On the contrary—this is the desire of each and every one.”

Total unity transforms individual effort into collective joy.

לכן ואהבת לרעך כמוך הוא כלל גדול בתורה.

“Therefore: ‘Love your fellow as yourself’ is a great principle of the Torah.”

Because unity is foundational, this command encompasses the entire Torah.

The Sefat Emet teaches that the final exile, rooted in baseless hatred, is healed through unity and acceptance of God’s sovereignty. The four languages of redemption align with four exiles, and the present one demands restoration of collective purpose, culminating in the Torah’s great principle: love of one’s fellow.
