Naaseh Before Nishma

Yitro · תרל"ז (1876) · Essay 2

“And in the Midrash: ‘They heard… House of Jacob… you lost the ‘we will do,’ be careful with the ‘we will hear.’”

The Midrash teaches that Israel was warned to guard the level of ‘hearing,’ since ‘we will do’ had been damaged.

He brings proof from Jethro, who heard and came.

This demonstrates the spiritual power inherent in hearing—the ability to draw a person close.

All the more so must a Jew be moved when hearing the voice of Torah.

If hearing awakened Jethro, how much more so should it awaken Israel.

And the explanation is that Israel preceded “we will do” to “we will hear.”

Their initial connection to Torah was beyond hearing, rooted in inner essence.

Meaning: Israel’s closeness does not come through hearing, as Jethro’s did, who heard and was subdued.

Israel’s bond is not based on self-nullification through hearing, but on intrinsic rootedness.

For Israel is truly inherently rooted in Torah.

Their connection is essential, not initiated externally.

If so, why did they also say “we will hear”?

If hearing is unnecessary for their essence, why include it?

This was in order to repair the lower elements within Israel who need hearing to draw close.

Hearing creates a path for those who cannot reach through essence alone.

And also to include the nations, who draw close through hearing.

Israel wished to open a path for all humanity to connect to Torah.

But after they damaged “we will do,” through sin losing their root, they needed to draw close through hearing like the nations.

Sin forced Israel to rely on the path of hearing rather than pure essence.

To add explanation: Israel is inherently bound to Torah.

This inner unity remains the defining truth of their identity.

As it is said: Torah, the Holy One, and Israel are all one.

This mystical unity underlies their essential connection.

Thus they do not need to be affected through hearing.

Their bond comes from within, not from external awakening.

Yet they still said “we will hear.”

This was purposeful and layered with meaning.

For certainly the levels of Torah are limitless.

Even those rooted in Torah can always ascend further.

And there is always a higher level beyond.

Endless ascent requires openness to new reception.

So they added “we will hear” as well.

They created a channel for further attainment beyond their natural grasp.

Meaning: through hearing they could attain what is above their innate level.

Hearing becomes a tool for transcending their current spiritual capacity.

And through this merit, they gained that even after sin damaged “we will do,”

The channel of hearing remained available.

They were left with the ability to cleave through hearing.

This form of connection could not be taken from them.

And although Israel should ideally cleave from their essence, not through hearing,

The ideal path was not available after the sin.

For hearing is the unique path of the nations.

Their connection begins externally.

As in the case of “Jethro heard.”

Jethro is the archetype of approaching through hearing.

But because Israel added “we will hear” for the sake of Heaven and to draw near the distant,

This elevated hearing was integrated into their spiritual structure.

Therefore they retained a repair after the sin through “we will hear.”

Hearing becomes the enduring bridge back to connection.

Summary: Israel’s essence binds them directly to Torah, beyond hearing. Yet by voluntarily adding “we will hear,” they created a channel for those on lower levels, for the nations, and for themselves to ascend endlessly. This same channel remained available after sin, allowing continued closeness through hearing when the path of pure essence was damaged.
