Sinai's two illuminations restored by mitzvos and Shabbos
Yitro · mattan Torah · tefillin · Shabbos · haaras panim · purity of heart
Now we are commanded each day to remember mattan Torah (the giving of the Torah), as it is written, "And you shall make known… the day that you stood before Hashem your Elokim at Chorev…" (Devarim 4:9-10)
There is a daily obligation to recall the giving of the Torah at Sinai, keeping that towering moment of standing before Hashem ever-present.
For the Torah is above time.
The Torah transcends time entirely, so its giving is not merely a past event but an ever-living reality.
If so, there is always within it a renewal, as at the moment of receiving the Torah.
Because the Torah is beyond time, the freshness and renewal of the original Sinai revelation are available in every moment.
And so it certainly would have been, had there not been the sin afterward.
This perpetual renewal would have remained openly accessible were it not for the sin of the Golden Calf that followed.
For at the receiving of the Torah the souls of Bnei Yisrael were elevated.
At Sinai the very souls of Bnei Yisrael were raised to an exalted level.
And just as through the Ten Utterances — "by the word of Hashem the heavens were made" (Tehillim 33:6).
As the heavens were brought into being by Hashem's creative speech in the ten utterances of creation.
So too with "Anochi Hashem Elokecha" (I am Hashem your God), Divinity rested upon the souls of Bnei Yisrael.
The first commandment, "Anochi," brought a Divine indwelling onto the souls of Bnei Yisrael, just as the creative utterances brought existence to the heavens.
And it is written, "Fear not, for it is in order to test you… that His fear may be upon your faces." (Shemos 20:17)
Moshe reassured them that the awesome revelation was meant to plant the fear of Hashem upon their very faces.
That is to say, they were given a haaras panim (a shining of the face) which corresponds to the penimiyus (inner dimension) found within a person.
"His fear upon your faces" means an inner radiance was granted them — a shining of the face that reflects the innermost point within a person.
And from the implication of what is said, "Fear not."
The very phrasing "Fear not" implies something about their spiritual state.
For they were truly yirei Shomayim (God-fearing), as it is taught in the Midrash that one says "Fear not" only to one who is genuinely God-fearing.
The reassurance "Fear not" is reserved for those who already possess authentic yiras Shomayim, proving that Bnei Yisrael at Sinai had true fear of Heaven.
And likewise it is written, "Would that this heart of theirs would remain in them…" (Devarim 5:26)
Hashem expressed the wish that the pure-hearted state Bnei Yisrael had at Sinai would endure within them.
"This heart of theirs" — its meaning is like "purity of heart" (bar levav).
The phrase refers to the clarity and purity of heart that Bnei Yisrael attained at the revelation.
But after the sin they fell from this level.
The sin of the Golden Calf caused them to descend from that exalted state of inner radiance and purity of heart.
Nevertheless, through the mitzvos that the Holy One gave us.
Even after the fall, Hashem provided a means of recovery through the mitzvos.
There is power to draw down the illumination of the neshamah (soul).
The mitzvos give us the ability to draw down again some of that lost soul-illumination of Sinai.
And it is taught that on Shabbos Kodesh, Moshe Rabbeinu returns to Bnei Yisrael the two crowns of placing "naaseh" (we will do) before "nishma" (we will hear).
The two crowns Bnei Yisrael received for declaring naaseh before nishma — and lost through the sin — are restored to them each Shabbos through Moshe Rabbeinu.
One may say that these are the two aforementioned illuminations — the shining of the face and the purity of heart.
The two crowns correspond to the two gifts of Sinai: the radiant haaras panim and the clear, pure heart.
And in the mitzvah of tefillin, even on the weekdays, these illuminations are found momentarily.
Through tefillin, even during the ordinary weekdays one can temporarily access these two Sinai illuminations.
The tefillin shel rosh (head-tefillin), as it is written, "the Name of Hashem is called upon you" (Devarim 28:10) — and this is the aforementioned shining of the face.
The head-tefillin, upon which Hashem's Name rests, embody the haaras panim — the radiance of the face associated with the head.
And the tefillin shel yad (hand-tefillin) is opposite the heart, to clarify the heart.
The hand-tefillin, placed opposite the heart, corresponds to the purity of heart — refining and clarifying the heart.
Therefore one must be wearing tefillin at the time of Krias Shema, for then one is able to bear witness to Him, may He be blessed, as it is written, "so that the Torah of Hashem may be in your mouth." (Shemos 13:9)
Wearing tefillin during the Shema empowers a person to testify to Hashem's kingship, fulfilling "the Torah of Hashem in your mouth."
And as it is written, "And I have placed My words in your mouth" (Yeshayahu 51:16) — that at the receiving of the Torah this power was given to the mouths of Yisrael to clarify His kingship in the world.
At Sinai, Bnei Yisrael were granted the power of speech to proclaim and make manifest Hashem's malchus (kingship) throughout the world.
And likewise on Shabbos Kodesh, which is called "yoma d'sahaduta" (the day of testimony), as it is written "Remember… the day of Shabbos," upon which the Torah was given.
Shabbos, the "day of testimony," is bound up with mattan Torah (which occurred on Shabbos), making it a day for bearing witness to Hashem.
And "Zachor" (Remember) and "Shamor" (Guard).
The two commands of Shabbos — to remember and to guard — themselves parallel the two illuminations.
They are the two aforementioned illuminations, as written elsewhere: "guarding" is in the heart, "remembering" is in the mouth and the mind.
"Shamor" corresponds to the heart (purity of heart) and "Zachor" to the mouth and mind (the shining of the face) — the same two gifts of Sinai.
And as it is taught, even an am haaretz (unlearned person) has the awe of Shabbos upon him, which is as it is written, "His fear upon your faces."
Even a simple, unlearned person feels an instinctive awe of Shabbos — the very same "fear upon the face" that was granted at Sinai.
The "face" that is unique to the Jewish person, by the power of the illumination of the neshamah yeseirah (the additional soul), as above.
This radiant "face" belongs uniquely to a Jew and is awakened on Shabbos through the neshamah yeseirah — the extra soul that restores the Sinai illumination.
Summary: The Torah, being above time, contains a perpetual renewal like the moment it was given, when Divinity rested on the souls of Bnei Yisrael and they received two illuminations — haaras panim (a shining of the face) and bar levav (purity of heart). Though they fell from this through the sin of the Calf, the mitzvos draw the soul-light back: tefillin restore both illuminations even on weekdays (head opposite the face, hand opposite the heart), and Shabbos — the day of testimony when the Torah was given — restores the two crowns of naaseh before nishma through its Zachor and Shamor and the neshamah yeseirah, granting even the unlearned the awe of Shabbos.
