Sinai's testimony fixed through thought, speech, deed

"And Hashem spoke… I am Hashem your God (Anochi Hashem Elokecha)" (Shemos 20:1-2).

The opening of the Aseres HaDibros is not merely a statement but the foundation of all that follows.

It is written, "Hear, My people, and I will testify against you (and bear witness to you)" (Tehillim 81:9).

Hashem's words to Bnei Yisrael are framed as testimony — an enduring eidus established within them.

For when the Holy One said, "I am Hashem your God"…

When Hashem declared "Anochi" at Sinai…

This was not merely a saying.

The declaration of "Anochi" was far more than words alone.

Rather, it was a true testimony, for His Godliness, may He be blessed, was revealed before the eyes of all Bnei Yisrael.

At Sinai every Jew directly perceived Hashem's presence, making the "Anochi" an unshakeable firsthand testimony.

And they saw that "Hashem is the God."

Bnei Yisrael saw with clarity that Hashem alone is the true Power.

And this testimony was fixed within the souls of Bnei Yisrael forever.

That perception of Sinai was permanently embedded in the soul of every Jew for all generations.

This is the meaning of "And He spoke… saying (leimor)."

The word "leimor" indicates that the speech was meant to be perpetuated and transmitted onward.

"I am Hashem your God" — through the power of the Torah.

The ongoing reality of "Anochi" is carried and sustained through the power of Torah.

As I have explained elsewhere.

The Sefas Emes refers to his treatment of this idea in another place.

About which it is written, "And you are My witnesses, says Hashem" (Yeshayahu 43:10) — meaning that through the power of Torah this testimony is fixed within Bnei Yisrael; and it is written, "The Torah of Hashem is perfect, restoring the soul" (Tehillim 19:8).

Bnei Yisrael are Hashem's "witnesses" because the Torah continually re-establishes the testimony of Sinai within them and restores the soul to its source.

That it restores the nefesh to its root.

The Torah draws the soul back to its origin in Hashem.

And the purpose of the Torah is to teach Bnei Yisrael how all the limbs and sinews are gripped in their root, through the power of the 613 mitzvos.

The 613 mitzvos correspond to the body's limbs and sinews, anchoring every part of a person to its spiritual source.

About this it is written, "It is a tree of life (eitz chaim) to those who hold fast to it" (Mishlei 3:18).

The Torah is a tree of life precisely because it holds every part of a person fast to its root.

From the expression "a limb holds (supports) a limb."

"Machazikim" (those who hold) is read in the sense of one limb supporting another, an organic, living connection.

For through the power of Torah, everything is restored to its root.

The Torah binds all the dispersed parts of creation and of a person back to their unified source.

And behold, Shabbos too is of this nature.

Shabbos similarly returns everything to its root.

Therefore it is called "Shabbos," as it says, "Let each man remain in his place (shevu ish tachtav)" (Shemos 16:29).

The name "Shabbos" connotes resting and returning to one's place, each thing settling into its root.

And it (Shabbos) is one of the Ten Commandments.

Shabbos is included among the Aseres HaDibros, bound up with the revelation of Sinai.

And Chazal said: the Torah was given on Shabbos.

The Torah and Shabbos are intertwined, for the Torah itself was given on Shabbos.

As it is written, "Remember (zachor)" — on the very essence of the day.

The mitzvah of "zachor" anchors Shabbos in the core of the day itself.

To hint that the Torah itself is the aspect of Shabbos.

Torah and Shabbos share one essence — both return all things to their root.

And it is taught: "Zachor" — with the mouth.

The remembering of Shabbos is fulfilled through verbal expression.

And this is the mitzvah of sanctifying the day (Kiddush) with the mouth.

"Zachor" with the mouth is the mitzvah of Kiddush, sanctifying Shabbos through speech.

For behold, there are the aspects of thought, speech, and deed (machshavah, dibbur, ma'aseh).

All avodah operates on three planes: thought, speech, and action.

And one must guard the Shabbos in all of these aspects.

Keeping Shabbos requires sanctifying it in thought, speech, and deed alike.

As it says, "If you restrain (your foot)… and honor it by not doing your own ways" (Yeshayahu 58:13).

"Not doing your own ways" is the dimension of guarding Shabbos in deed.

"From pursuing your affairs (mimtzo cheftzecha)" — this is will and thought.

Refraining from seeking one's desires corresponds to guarding Shabbos in the realm of ratzon and machshavah.

"And speaking words (v'daber davar)."

This corresponds to guarding Shabbos in the realm of speech.

And likewise the reward for all these: "Then you shall delight (al Hashem)" — in thought, "and I will cause you to ride (upon the heights of the earth)" — in deed.

The reward verses parallel the three planes: "delighting in Hashem" is thought, "I will cause you to ride" is deed.

"And I will feed you the heritage of Yaakov" — this is speech in Torah, which is the aspect of "the voice of Yaakov" (kol Yaakov).

The "heritage of Yaakov" corresponds to speech, specifically the words of Torah, the "voice of Yaakov."

And the matter is that just as it is in the individual person…

These three planes exist not only in a person but in creation as a whole.

So too in the whole of creation there were the aspects of deed, speech, and thought.

Creation itself unfolds through the same three dimensions of action, speech, and thought.

Now, the rectification of the work of creation (ma'aseh bereishis) was at the Exodus from Mitzrayim, in the aspect of "deed" (asiyah).

Yetzias Mitzrayim repaired creation on the plane of action.

As it says, "You have seen what I did (to Mitzrayim)" (Shemos 19:4).

The language of "what I did" marks the Exodus as the dimension of deed.

As it says, "And Yisrael saw… (the great hand) that He did" (Shemos 14:31).

Again the Exodus is described in terms of action — "that He did."

And afterward, at the receiving of the Torah, the aspect of "speech" — "And Hashem spoke (vayedaber Elokim)."

Matan Torah repaired creation on the plane of speech, marked by "vayedaber."

As it says, "You have seen that from the heavens I spoke with you" (Shemos 20:19).

The revelation at Sinai is described as Hashem "speaking," the dimension of dibbur.

And Shabbos too contains these three.

Shabbos itself encompasses all three dimensions of deed, speech, and thought.

And this is hinted in the three (Shabbos) meals.

The three seudos of Shabbos correspond to the three planes of avodah.

And it is the reward for one who keeps Shabbos in the three aspects mentioned above.

The three meals are the reward for keeping Shabbos in thought, speech, and deed.

Therefore, even though before the (Ten) Commandments Shabbos was given to Bnei Yisrael at Marah and through the manna…

Shabbos was already commanded earlier at Marah and through the laws of the man, before Sinai.

But then it was on the plane of "deed," as it says, "Let each man remain in his place."

The early giving of Shabbos was on the level of action — physical resting in place.

And this is the aspect of "I will cause you to ride upon the heights of the earth."

This action-level Shabbos corresponds to the reward of "riding upon the heights of the earth."

The Shabbos that alludes to the creation of the world and the Exodus from Mitzrayim.

This dimension of Shabbos recalls both ma'aseh bereishis and yetzias Mitzrayim, both on the plane of deed.

And something similar I heard from my grandfather, of blessed memory, on what Chazal said that "Shabbos was given at Marah."

The Sefas Emes cites his grandfather's teaching about where Shabbos is hinted at Marah.

How is it hinted there?

The question is where in the Marah narrative Shabbos is alluded to.

And he said: in what is written, "and there He tested him (v'sham nisahu)" (Shemos 15:25).

The grandfather found the hint to Shabbos in the word "nisahu" at Marah.

And "nisahu" is a term of raising and ascent, like "raise a banner (se'u nes)" (Yeshayahu 62:10).

"Nisahu" is read not as "tested" but as a lifting up, from the root meaning a raised banner.

And it alludes to the ascents (aliyos) of Shabbos.

The word hints at the spiritual elevations that Shabbos brings.

And this is the aspect of "I will cause you to ride upon the heights of the earth" that I wrote.

The ascent of Shabbos at Marah matches the reward of "riding upon the heights," the deed-level dimension.

And now, in the (Ten) Commandments, Shabbos is given in the aspect of "speech."

At Sinai, Shabbos is given anew on the higher plane of dibbur.

And this is "the heritage of Yaakov" in Shabbos, which alludes to the receiving of the Torah, for the Torah was given on Shabbos.

The speech-dimension of Shabbos is the "heritage of Yaakov," tied to Matan Torah which occurred on Shabbos.

And "then you shall delight in Hashem" alludes to "the day that is entirely Shabbos," the aspect of thought (machshavah).

The highest dimension, "delighting in Hashem," corresponds to thought and to the future world that is wholly Shabbos.

And it is above all of them.

The plane of thought is the loftiest of the three.

And it will be fulfilled in the future (l'asid).

This highest, thought-level Shabbos awaits its complete realization in the World to Come.

Therefore now it is not spelled out, because the rectification is not complete until the future.

The thought-dimension remains unstated in the present because creation's full tikkun will only be achieved in the times to come.

Summary: The Sefas Emes teaches that "Anochi Hashem Elokecha" was not mere speech but a living testimony of Sinai, permanently fixed within the soul of every Jew and continually renewed through the power of Torah, which restores all the limbs and sinews to their root. Shabbos shares this same essence of returning everything to its source. Both the individual, creation, and Shabbos operate on three planes — deed, speech, and thought — corresponding to yetzias Mitzrayim (deed), Matan Torah (speech), and the future "day that is entirely Shabbos" (thought). The three Shabbos meals reflect these levels, and the highest, the dimension of thought, remains unspelled-out now because the full tikkun awaits the times to come.
