Shemittah as testimony revealing Hashem's hidden kingship

"And the land shall rest, a Shabbos unto Hashem" (Vayikra 25:2).
The Sefas Emes opens on shemittah, the land's "Shabbos," and links it to the Shabbos of Creation.
As is written regarding the Shabbos of Bereishis.
He draws the parallel to the weekly Shabbos, the Shabbos of Creation, which shemittah mirrors.
And just as the Shabbos is called "testimony" (sahadusa) — that it is the testimony of Bnei Yisrael that He created His world in six [days] and rested on the seventh — so too shemittah is testimony.
Shabbos is testimony to Hashem as Creator. Likewise, by letting the land lie fallow every seventh year, Bnei Yisrael testify that the world and its bounty belong to Hashem.
And it is brought in the Midrash on "Bless Hashem, His angels… those who fulfill His word (osei devaro)" (Tehillim 103:20) — likewise the verse speaks of those who keep the seventh year, as it is written, "and this is the matter (devar) of the shemittah."
The Midrash applies the praise of the angels who "fulfill His word" to the keepers of shemittah, linking "osei devaro" to the "devar ha'shemittah" — those who keep the sabbatical year are like the heavenly hosts that carry out Hashem's will.
The meaning: that through Bnei Yisrael, malchus Shomayim (the kingship of Heaven) and supernal guidance are revealed, for "davar" denotes governance, as in "He subdues (yadber) nations."
"Davar" connotes rule and governance. By keeping shemittah, Bnei Yisrael reveal Hashem's kingship and His supernal hanhagah (guidance) over the world.
Now, it is written, "Like an apple tree among the trees of the forest" — Chazal expounded: just as the apple tree has no shade, [so the nations all fled from it]; therefore they all fled from receiving the Torah.
The apple tree giving little shade represents how Hashem's kingship is not openly visible in the world. The nations "fled" from the Torah because its truth is not plainly revealed in nature.
The meaning: that the supernal guidance is not revealed in the world, for everything is clothed within nature (teva).
Hashem's governance is concealed beneath the garment of nature; the divine hanhagah is hidden within the ordinary workings of teva.
Only to Bnei Yisrael, who longed for the glory of His kingship to be revealed in the world, was it granted to bring this from potential into actuality.
Because Bnei Yisrael yearned for Hashem's malchus to become manifest, they were given the role of actualizing that revelation — drawing the hidden kingship into the open.
Therefore they are called "those who fulfill His word" (osei devaro).
This is why Bnei Yisrael earn the title "osei devaro" — they are the ones who actualize Hashem's governance in the world.
And therefore Bnei Yisrael placed "na'aseh" (we will do) before "nishma" (we will hear), for they understood this — that one must rectify through action so that His kingship, blessed be He, can be revealed in the world.
Their famous "na'aseh venishma" reflects this insight: action comes first, because it is precisely through deeds — the mitzvos — that Hashem's concealed kingship is drawn into actual revelation.
And on Shabbos, through Bnei Yisrael nullifying all melachah and awaiting the supernal guidance, they merit the spreading of the sukkah of peace (sukkas shalom).
By ceasing all work on Shabbos and looking to Hashem's guidance rather than their own efforts, Bnei Yisrael draw down the sheltering "sukkah of peace" — the canopy of the Shechinah.
And through them the kedushah is revealed on the holy Shabbos, and the world receives a supernal guidance that is above nature.
Bnei Yisrael are the conduit: through their Shabbos observance, kedushah is revealed and the entire world is granted a hanhagah that transcends the natural order.
Therefore it is written, "You are My witnesses, and I am God" (Yeshayahu 43:12).
Bnei Yisrael are Hashem's witnesses — Chazal read this as: "when you are My witnesses, I am God," for their testimony reveals His kingship.
As has been said many times, that this testimony is not with the mouth alone, but it is a testimony of truth when guidance above nature is revealed through them.
True testimony is not mere words; it is borne out when a supernatural hanhagah actually becomes visible in the world through Bnei Yisrael's avodah.
And therefore Chazal said that one who recites "Vayechulu" on Shabbos becomes a partner with the Holy One in the work of Creation, because through this testimony a kedushah and supernal guidance are renewed in the work of Creation.
Reciting Vayechulu is itself testimony that renews kedushah in Creation; by giving this testimony, a person becomes Hashem's "partner" in ma'aseh bereishis, drawing fresh divine guidance into the world.
And likewise with shemittah, nature itself is literally changed, for in every sixth year the produce yields enough for three years.
Shemittah produces an open, visible miracle: the sixth year's harvest provides for three years, demonstrating Hashem's supernatural governance breaking through nature.
And likewise a kedushah is revealed in every shemittah.
Just as Shabbos reveals kedushah weekly, each shemittah year reveals a fresh kedushah in the world.
And not only this, but even throughout all seven years of the shemittah cycle a kedushah is revealed through the shemittos.
The kedushah is not confined to the seventh year alone; the institution of shemittah radiates holiness across the entire seven-year cycle.
Now, at the receiving of the Torah, where the essential thing was the precedence of "na'aseh" before "nishma," they merited "Anochi Hashem your God," which is the guidance of His kingship, blessed be He.
Because Bnei Yisrael put deed before hearing at Sinai, they merited the first commandment "Anochi" — the very revelation of Hashem's malchus and His guidance of the world.
And about this the verse concludes, "He brought me to the house of wine" — they expounded: to a great wine-cellar, this is Sinai; "and gave me the Torah," which was expounded in forty-nine facets, from the count of "and his banner [over me was love]" — that they were elevated through the forty-nine gates of binah.
At Sinai (the "wine-cellar") Bnei Yisrael received the Torah, expounded in forty-nine facets, ascending through the forty-nine sha'arei binah (gates of understanding) — the same count counted during Sefiras HaOmer.
And likewise with the seven shemittos it is written, "and there shall be for you… forty-nine years," which are the forty-nine levels (dargin) by which one is elevated year after year, until "and you shall sanctify… the fiftieth year" — for the fiftieth gate cannot be grasped; therefore it is written only, "and there shall be for you… forty-nine."
The seven sabbatical cycles totaling forty-nine years correspond to those same forty-nine gradations of ascent, one per year. The fiftieth — the Yovel — is the unattainable fiftieth gate; hence the Torah assigns to man only the forty-nine, reserving the fiftieth for Hashem.
Therefore the verse juxtaposed the mitzvos of shemittos and yovlos to Har Sinai.
This is why the Torah places the laws of shemittah and yovel right beside "Har Sinai" — for the forty-nine-year ascent of the sabbatical cycles parallels the forty-nine gates of binah attained at Sinai.
Summary: Like the weekly Shabbos, shemittah is Bnei Yisrael's testimony that Hashem created and governs the world. Though His supernal guidance is normally concealed within nature, Bnei Yisrael — who longed for His kingship to be revealed — actualize it through action, which is why they placed "na'aseh" before "nishma" and are called "those who fulfill His word." By nullifying their melachah on Shabbos and letting the land rest in shemittah (where nature visibly changes, the sixth year feeding three), they draw down a kedushah and hanhagah above nature, becoming Hashem's partners and witnesses. The seven sabbatical cycles of forty-nine years mirror the forty-nine gates of binah attained at Sinai — the fiftieth gate, the Yovel, remaining beyond human grasp — which is why shemittah and yovel are juxtaposed to Har Sinai.
