Bnei Yisrael draw down kedushah
moados · Birkas Kohanim · olam shanah nefesh · kohen · Shabbos
There is a continuity in the sections dealing with the kedushah of the kohen, the festivals (moados), the lamps, and the lechem hapanim.
The Sefas Emes notes that the parsha groups together the holiness of the kohen, the holy days, the Menorah, and the showbread, and asks what binds them as one theme.
For the moados shine and impart kedushah upon all the times, and this comes through the agency of Bnei Yisrael, as it is written, "which you shall proclaim."
The festivals radiate holiness onto the entire year, but only because Bnei Yisrael "call them out" — it is the people who sanctify the times.
And in the Midrash on "What great nation… whenever we call upon Him" — these are the moados, which are called mikra'ei kodesh (holy convocations).
The phrase "whenever we call" is read as referring to the festivals, the "callings of holiness" that Bnei Yisrael declare.
And when Bnei Yisrael awaken the kedushah in these days, setting them apart for holiness, the Holy One pours kedushah into them.
Holiness flows from below upward: when the people designate a day for kedushah, Hashem responds by infusing that day with holiness.
And likewise, when Bnei Yisrael build a place of sanctuary, as it is written, "And they shall make for Me a Mikdash, and I will dwell."
The same principle applies to sacred space: Bnei Yisrael build the Mishkan, and only then does the Shechinah rest within it.
And likewise in souls, as it is written, "And you shall sanctify him, for he offers the bread of your God."
The same dynamic governs holy persons: the kohen is sanctified by the people, who set him apart to serve.
And through the power of all Bnei Yisrael, kedushah descends upon the kohen who is singled out among the people to be holy to Hashem.
The kohen's holiness is not his alone; it is drawn down by the collective sanctification of the entire nation.
This is the meaning of "whenever we call upon Him."
The verse "in all our calling" expresses this shared theme of Bnei Yisrael drawing down holiness.
Whether in olam (space), in shanah (time), or in nefesh (soul).
The three domains — space, time, and soul — correspond to the Mikdash, the moados, and the kohen, each sanctified by Bnei Yisrael.
And a measure of this exists in every individual, when a person designates for himself a special day, a special place, and a special limb to be holy to Hashem.
Each person can replicate this in miniature, setting aside his own time, place, and bodily faculty for the service of Hashem.
And through these three aspects — olam, shanah, nefesh (space, time, soul) — the rectification of the entire world, all times, and all souls was accomplished.
These three categories together encompass all of creation, and sanctifying them brings about a universal tikkun.
And the sections of the lamps and the bread were placed adjacent to the moados to teach that they illuminate and give shefa (abundant flow) to the entire year.
The juxtaposition of the Menorah and showbread with the festivals shows that these too radiate light and sustenance throughout the year.
Therefore the mitzvah of light on Shabbos and Yom Tov is an obligation.
Kindling lights on the sacred days is mandatory because light enters the world specifically through them.
For light cannot enter the world except by means of these holy times.
The sacred days are the channels through which spiritual illumination reaches the world.
And the three blessings of Birkas Kohanim are likewise [a word is missing here]: "May Hashem bless you" is parnasah (livelihood), from which the six weekdays are blessed; therefore the lechem hapanim was set out every Shabbos and in the Mikdash, from where the blessing issues forth.
The first blessing of the kohanim, "yevarechecha," corresponds to material sustenance — the source from which the whole week draws its blessing, mirrored by the weekly showbread placed in the Mikdash, the fountainhead of berachah.
"May Hashem make His face shine" — this is the lights of Shabbos and of the Mikdash.
The second blessing, "ya'er," corresponds to spiritual light, embodied in the Shabbos candles and the Menorah of the Mikdash.
"Shalom" is the spreading of the sukkah of peace on Shabbos and the ketores in the Mikdash, which is unity and bonding, as the Zohar states that Aharon merited the ketores because he is a lover of peace.
The third blessing, "shalom," corresponds to the peace of Shabbos and to the incense, whose very nature is to bind all things together — which is why the peace-loving Aharon was given the ketores.
Summary: The kohen, the festivals, the Menorah, and the showbread are bound by a single principle: holiness flows into space, time, and soul only when Bnei Yisrael awaken it from below. The three threefold blessings of Birkas Kohanim — parnasah, light, and shalom — map onto the showbread, the lamps, and the peace of Shabbos and the ketores, all of which channel berachah and illumination into the entire year.
