Two levels of Shabbos freedom

Concerning the matter of Shabbos HaGadol (the Great Shabbos).
The Sefas Emes turns to explain why the Shabbos before Pesach is called "the Great Shabbos."
As it is brought in the Ra'aya Mehemna on this parshah, that there are two aspects of Shabbos: one for the person who is enslaved to physicality… see there.
The Zohar's Ra'aya Mehemna distinguishes two levels of Shabbos. The first is the Shabbos of a person still bound up in material servitude.
For even in Mitzrayim they kept the Shabbos, and it is a day of rest from all forms of servitude.
Even amid the slavery of Egypt, Bnei Yisrael observed Shabbos as a day of rest — a respite from every kind of bondage and labor.
And on Shabbos one becomes a free person and is able to accept upon himself the yoke of the Kingship of Heaven.
This first Shabbos frees a person from his servitude just enough that he can take upon himself ol malchus Shomayim (the yoke of Heaven) — the basic liberation of Shabbos.
And there is a Shabbos greater than this, for one who is under the yoke of the Kingship of Heaven all his days.
The second, higher level of Shabbos belongs to one who already lives continually under the yoke of Heaven, every day of the week.
Then, on the holy Shabbos, he has rest to serve Him with love and with an expansiveness of heart.
For such a person, Shabbos is not merely escape from servitude but a restful, joyous space to serve Hashem out of ahavah (love) and openhearted breadth.
And he does not need toil as on the weekdays.
His avodah on this higher Shabbos flows effortlessly, without the strain and struggle that mark his service during the week.
And then, when Bnei Yisrael went out from Mitzrayim — and when Moshe Rabbeinu, peace be upon him, assured them that they would go out with this final plague — they became free people and went out from the servitude of Pharaoh; and therefore this Shabbos is called "Shabbos HaGadol."
On that Shabbos before the Exodus, Moshe assured Bnei Yisrael that the final plague would bring their freedom; they passed from the lower Shabbos (rest amid servitude) into the higher Shabbos of true freedom from Pharaoh — and so it is called the "Great Shabbos."
Summary: There are two levels of Shabbos. The lower one — kept even by slaves in Mitzrayim — frees a person from servitude enough to accept the yoke of Heaven. The greater one belongs to those already living under that yoke all week, for whom Shabbos becomes restful, loving, effortless service of Hashem. On the Shabbos before the Exodus, Bnei Yisrael ascended from the first level to the second, becoming truly free from Pharaoh — and so it is called Shabbos HaGadol.
