Daily renewal of the Kohen Gadol

Concerning the Minchas Chavitin (the griddle-cake meal-offering), which is called the "Minchas Chinuch" (the inauguration offering), and which the Kohen Gadol brings every single day.

The Sefas Emes notes a puzzle: an "inauguration" offering would seem to be a one-time event, yet the Kohen Gadol brings this chinuch-offering daily — as if he is being newly inaugurated each day.

ונראה כי הכ"ג מתחדש בכל יום ומתעלה מיום ליום לכן מביא בכל יום המנחה.

It appears that the Kohen Gadol is renewed each day and rises higher from day to day; therefore he brings this minchah every day.

The daily "inauguration" offering reflects a real spiritual fact: the Kohen Gadol is not a static figure but is constantly being made new and elevated, so each day genuinely calls for a fresh dedication.

ובגמ' מבעי' כהני שלוחי דידן או דרחמנא.

And in the Gemara it is asked: are the Kohanim our agents (the agents of the people) or agents of HaRachamana (Hashem)?

The Talmud debates whether a Kohen serving in the Mikdash represents the Jewish people who bring the offering, or whether he acts as Hashem's own emissary.

ואפשר כי הכ"ג לכ"ע שלוחי דרחמנא שנק' מלאך ה' צבאות.

And it is possible that the Kohen Gadol, according to all opinions, is an agent of HaRachamana, for he is called "a malach (angel/messenger) of Hashem of Hosts" (Malachi 2:7).

Even if ordinary Kohanim are debated, the Kohen Gadol uniquely may be Hashem's agent by all views — the navi explicitly calls the Kohen a "messenger of Hashem."

וכמו שהמלאכים מתחדשים חדשים לבקרים כמו כן הכהן גדול.

And just as the malachim are renewed "fresh every morning" (Eichah 3:23), so too is the Kohen Gadol.

Chazal teach that angels are created anew each day to sing Hashem's praise and then pass away. Because the Kohen Gadol is Hashem's "angel," he shares this quality of daily renewal — explaining his daily inauguration offering.

ועמ"ש בפ' קרח בפסוק אשר יבחר ה' הוא הקדוש:

And see what I wrote in Parshas Korach on the verse "the one whom Hashem chooses, he is the holy one" (Bamidbar 16:7).

The Sefas Emes cross-references his teaching on Korach, where the holiness of the chosen Kohen is likewise tied to Hashem's ongoing selection rather than to a static, one-time status.

נראה עוד דכמו דכתיב בשמן המשחה יהי' לי ודרשו חז"ל שכולו קיים.

It further appears that, just as it is written concerning the shemen ha-mishchah (the anointing oil), "it shall be Mine" (Shemos 30:31), and Chazal expounded that all of it endures eternally.

Chazal teach that the original anointing oil prepared by Moshe Rabbeinu miraculously never diminished — every drop remained intact for all generations.

כמו כן כל השמן שניתן על הכ"ג הי' מתקיים בנס תמיד.

So too, all the oil that was placed upon the Kohen Gadol endured miraculously, always.

The same wonder that preserved the oil in the flask also preserved the oil once it was poured on the Kohen Gadol — it did not simply soak away but remained as a lasting reality.

ושוב נזכרתי שכן הוא בגמ' דכריתות שהי' בזקן אהרן טפי' כמרגליות עולות ויורדות ע"ש.

And then I recalled that this is indeed stated in the Gemara of Kereisos: that on Aharon's beard the drops were like pearls, rising and descending — see there.

The Sefas Emes finds support: the Talmud describes the anointing oil resting on Aharon's beard as glistening, pearl-like drops that miraculously hovered, confirming that the oil on the Kohen Gadol endured wondrously.

ומזה ניתן לדורות לכל כהן גדול.

And from this it was given to all generations, to every Kohen Gadol.

This enduring quality was not Aharon's alone; the same lasting spiritual light was conferred upon every Kohen Gadol who would follow.

הגם שנגנז שמן המשחה מ"מ ההארה שקיבל הכהן גדול נשאר לדורות שכן כתיב יהי' זה לי לדורותיכם:

Even though the anointing oil itself was hidden away, nevertheless the illumination that the Kohen Gadol received remained for all generations, as it is written: "This shall be Mine for your generations" (Shemos 30:31).

Although the physical oil was concealed before the destruction of the first Bais Hamikdash, the spiritual ohr (light) it conveyed was never lost. The verse "for your generations" guarantees that the inner illumination of the Kohen Gadol continues to endure.

Summary: The Kohen Gadol brings a daily "inauguration" offering because, like the malachim who are renewed each morning, he is constantly being made new and elevated as Hashem's own emissary. Just as the anointing oil never diminished and glistened like pearls on Aharon's beard, the inner illumination the Kohen Gadol received endures for all generations — even after the physical oil was hidden away — as the verse promises, "This shall be Mine for your generations."
