Mitzvos as lamps for the soul's light

In the Midrash: "Hashem desired… to make the Torah great and glorious" (Yeshayahu 42:21); and so it is in the Mishnah, "Hashem wished to grant merit to Yisrael, therefore He increased for them Torah and mitzvos," as it is written, "For a mitzvah is a lamp and the Torah is light" (Mishlei 6:23).

Hashem gave abundant mitzvos out of love, to provide Bnei Yisrael more avenues to draw down the "light" of Torah, since each mitzvah is a lamp in which that light can shine.

And it is like the neshamah in the body, where the power of the soul spreads through the limbs of a person.

The light of Torah relates to the mitzvos as the soul relates to the body: a single inner force that animates and spreads through every part.

And moreover, according to the expansion of the body, so the soul expands, as is written in the Zohar HaKadosh, parshas Vayeshev, on the pasuk, "He forms the spirit of man within him" (Zechariah 12:1); see there.

The more "vessels" — limbs, or by analogy mitzvos — a person has, the more the soul's light can expand into them; the soul grows to fill whatever capacity is prepared for it.

Likewise Hashem did an act of tzedakah, that the Torah should become great and be spread out into 613 pathways.

By dividing the Torah's light into 613 mitzvos, Hashem performed a kindness, creating 613 distinct channels through which that single light could reach a person.

For every mitzvah is the drawing down of a new path from the Torah.

Each mitzvah opens a fresh route by which the supernal light of Torah descends into the world.

And the drawing down of the Torah's light into these lamps of mitzvah comes through the power of the fulfillment of the mitzvos that Bnei Yisrael perform.

The lamp of a mitzvah is only kindled when a Jew actually performs it; the deed itself draws the Torah's light into the mitzvah.

Therefore it is brought that "a mitzvah, at the time one is occupied with it, protects" (Sotah 21a), for then it becomes a lit lamp from the light of Torah.

A mitzvah shields a person specifically while he is engaged in it, because in that moment the mitzvah is a burning lamp ablaze with the light of Torah.

This is what the Midrash says: "My lamp is in your hand, and your lamp is in My hand" — "The lamp of Hashem is the soul of man, searching all the chambers of the innards" (Mishlei 20:27).

There is a mutual relationship: the mitzvos ("My lamp") are entrusted to a person to kindle, and his neshamah ("your lamp") is held by Hashem; the soul is Hashem's lamp that illumines and searches a person's innermost chambers.

The explanation: just as a person keeps the mitzvos and the light of Torah is drawn into the lamp of the mitzvah, so his soul shines into his limbs.

The same dynamic operates inwardly: by keeping mitzvos a person causes his own neshamah to radiate its light throughout his body.

"Searching all the chambers of the innards" (chofes) can be understood as the Pesikta explains on the pasuk, "I will search (achapes) Yerushalayim with lamps" (Tzefaniah 1:12) — from the expression "he shall send him free (la'chofshi)" — "I am bringing Yerushalayim out to freedom"; see there.

The Sefas Emes rereads chofes ("searching") as related to chofshi ("freedom"): the lamp of the soul does not merely inspect the chambers of the body, it liberates them.

Likewise, through the illumination of the soul in each and every limb, it brings the limb out to freedom, that it should not be stuck in physicality and the imprisonment of the body, but rather attaches it to its root; and one merits all this according to the fulfillment of the mitzvos.

The soul's light frees each limb from being trapped in mere physicality, reconnecting it to its spiritual source — and the degree of this liberation depends on how fully a person keeps the mitzvos.

And behold, just as it is regarding the individual person, so it is regarding the collective: Bnei Yisrael are the souls, and they illuminate the whole world.

What is true of one person — soul illuminating body — is true of the world entire: Bnei Yisrael are the "soul" of creation, lighting up all of mankind.

And it is brought in the Gemara on the pasuk "the righteous acts (tzidkos) of His dispersion in Yisrael" (Shoftim 5:11): Hashem did an act of tzedakah in dispersing them among the nations; as it is written, "He formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life" (Bereishis 2:7) — the soul was given to refine the material, to extract from within it the holy sparks (nitzotzei kedushah) and to separate the food from the waste.

The scattering of Bnei Yisrael among the nations is itself a kindness, mirroring how the soul was placed within the dust of the body: its purpose is to refine the coarse matter and draw out the holy sparks hidden inside it.

And likewise in the collective, Bnei Yisrael were sent into the world mixed among the nations, as it is written, "and I have separated you from the peoples" (Vayikra 20:26), about which Chazal expounded the image of "sorting, and again sorting" (borer v'chozer u'vorer).

The dispersion is a process of repeated sorting: Bnei Yisrael are placed among the nations to continually separate and draw out the good and the holy, like one who sifts and re-sifts to refine.

And therefore Hashem gave us the mitzvos, that they should be an aid to us in performing these refinements (birurim).

The mitzvos are the tools Hashem provided to carry out the work of refinement — sorting holiness out of the coarse world.

And it is written, "He gathers in the dispersed of Yisrael (nidchei Yisrael)" (Tehillim 147:2); and it is brought that "nidchei Yisrael" has the gematria of 613.

The phrase "the dispersed of Yisrael" numerically equals 613, hinting that it is precisely through the 613 mitzvos that the scattered are gathered back in.

And likewise "Hashem, the God of Yisrael" (Hashem Elokei Yisrael) has the gematria of 613.

The same numerical value (613) is found in "Hashem the God of Yisrael," linking Hashem's own Name to the mitzvos and to the gathering of His scattered people.

For regarding Hashem, as it were, it is written, "I am with him in distress" (Tehillim 91:15), and "I will descend with you to Mitzrayim" (Bereishis 46:4).

Hashem does not leave His people in their dispersion; His presence descends with them into every galus, just as He went down with Yaakov to Mitzrayim.

And likewise in every galus, His Name, may He be blessed, goes with us, and He gives us strength through the 613 mitzvos to perform these refinements.

In each exile the Divine Presence accompanies Bnei Yisrael, empowering them through the 613 mitzvos to accomplish the work of birur wherever they are scattered.

"Nidchei" (the dispersed) has the gematria of the Name of 72 (Shem of Ayin-Beis).

The word for "the dispersed" equals 72, the value of the great Divine Name, hinting that the very dispersion of Bnei Yisrael is bound up with the revelation of Hashem's Name in the world.

Summary: Hashem multiplied Torah and mitzvos as an act of kindness, giving Bnei Yisrael 613 "lamps" through which the single light of Torah can spread — just as the soul radiates through the limbs of the body. On the national scale, Bnei Yisrael are the soul of the world, and their dispersion among the nations is itself a tzedakah: they are scattered in order to refine the material world and draw out its holy sparks, empowered by the 613 mitzvos, with Hashem's Name accompanying them through every galus until "the dispersed of Yisrael" are gathered in.
