Peace born out of machlokes
machlokes · shalom · Shabbos · Korach · shleimus
The Mishnah teaches: a machlokes (dispute) that is not for the sake of Heaven will not endure in the end — this is the machlokes of Korach (Avos 5:17).
The Sefas Emes opens with Chazal's distinction: a quarrel pursued for selfish ends has no lasting outcome, and Korach's rebellion is the prime example of such a doomed dispute.
As it is written in the Book of the Wars of Hashem: "Es vahev b'sufah" (Bamidbar 21:14), and Chazal expounded: a father and son who toil together in Torah become like enemies to one another, yet in the end they become beloved friends.
Even a "war" of Torah learning, where two scholars clash sharply over the truth, ends in love — because the conflict was a search for Hashem's truth, not a battle of egos.
This is the meaning of a machlokes for the sake of Heaven; it is then called "the Wars of Hashem," and therefore it endures in the end — this is "vahev b'sufah" (love at its end).
When the only goal of the disagreement is the ratzon Hashem (Hashem's will), the very contention is sanctified as Hashem's war and produces a permanent result: ahavah (love).
For in truth shalom (peace), which is a good trait, itself comes out of machlokes, since peace is only relevant between two sides.
Peace is not the absence of difference; it presupposes two distinct parties. Real shalom is the harmony achieved precisely between opposing positions.
But if the dispute is for the sake of Heaven, one merits to reach shalom.
Only when both sides are seeking the truth rather than victory does the friction resolve into peace.
For in truth every person has his own unique insight in Torah, and each party to a dispute must recognize that his fellow too holds a different view, and not stubbornly insist on his own opinion but only seek the emes (truth); then Hashem enlightens their eyes and peace emerges from the very dispute.
Each Jew has a portion of Torah that only he can grasp. When disputants honor that and chase truth rather than ego, Hashem illuminates them and their clash itself becomes the source of peace.
And it is true that "b'sufah" (at its end) refers to the aspect of shalom, the aspect of Yosef HaTzaddik.
The "end" that brings love is the attribute of Yosef, the tzaddik who is yesod (foundation) and binds opposites together in peace.
So too in this world (olam hazeh), all offspring come into being from male and female, and each has an opposite character, as it is written "k'negdo" (corresponding to / opposite him).
Creation itself runs on paired opposites — male and female, each the counterpart of the other — yet from this very opposition new life is born.
Nevertheless, both of them intend one and the same thing, and peace is made in the end.
Despite being opposites, the two partners aim at a single shared purpose, so their difference culminates in unity.
So too in the inner dimension (penimiyus): each of the six weekdays has its own distinct character, and therefore Shabbos completed the world, which had been lacking menuchah (rest) — and this is the aspect of "love at the end," and then peace was made; and it is written afterward, "These are the toldos (generations) of heaven and earth" (Bereishis 2:4).
The six days of creation are six diverse forces, like disputing parties. Shabbos supplies the missing rest that unites them in love, and only then can heaven and earth be called a finished, harmonious "offspring."
This is the meaning of the "set time" of talmidei chachamim (Torah scholars) being from Shabbos to Shabbos (Kesubos 62b).
The Torah scholar's appointed time is davka on Shabbos, because Shabbos is the day of union and love that crowns the week's diversity.
In truth, shalom does not exist in this world except through the power of siyata d'Shmaya (Heavenly assistance), as the Midrash (Bereishis Rabbah 8:5) says: Truth and Peace said, "Let him [man] not be created, for he is all lies and all strife."
By nature olam hazeh is a realm of falsehood and quarreling; genuine peace can only enter it as a gift from Above, not as something the world produces on its own.
Therefore one who grasps onto dispute excessively has no endurance in the world.
Because peace is the divine, lasting force, one who clings to strife for its own sake cuts himself off from that which gives existence permanence.
Moshe Rabbeinu, alav hashalom, merited the Torah of emes (truth).
Moshe embodies pure truth — the Torah given through him is called "Toras emes."
And Aharon merited the aspect of shalom.
Aharon is the one who "loves peace and pursues peace," the human channel for harmony among Bnei Yisrael.
And Korach was the opposite of Aharon — a master of machlokes.
Korach is the anti-Aharon: instead of pursuing peace, he made strife his very identity.
And Dasan and Aviram were the opposite of Moshe Rabbeinu, alav hashalom — masters of falsehood.
As Moshe is the man of truth, Dasan and Aviram are the men of lies, the counterforce to him.
This is the meaning of the swallowing by the "mouth of the earth," and it is taught that the mouth of the earth was created on Erev Shabbos at twilight (bein hashmashos) (Avos 5:6).
The earth's mouth that swallowed Korach was one of the special creations of the first Erev Shabbos twilight — a hint that it belongs to the theme of Shabbos and completion, not merely punishment.
It is far-fetched that its purpose was only to swallow the wicked.
If the earth's mouth was prepared from creation itself, it must serve a deeper function than merely punishing rebels.
Rather, the matter is as stated above: that this world lacks completeness (shleimus).
The deeper point is that olam hazeh is inherently unfinished and needs to receive its perfection from above.
Therefore the earth must receive the final completion from the heavens — and this is what it means that the world was lacking menuchah (rest).
The earth, the lower realm, cannot complete itself; it depends on an inflow of perfection from Shomayim, the very rest that was missing until Shabbos.
And the "mouth" opened with the coming of Shabbos in order to receive the completion from above.
The earth's "mouth" symbolizes its readiness to receive — when Shabbos arrives, the earth opens to draw down the perfection that finishes creation.
Just as we receive the Shabbos, so too the whole of creation awaits the completion that comes on Shabbos.
Our weekly act of "receiving" Shabbos mirrors a cosmic longing: all of creation is waiting to be perfected by the Shabbos influx.
And this is the cleaving of everything to its root (shoresh), and then one merits even in this world to truth and peace, even though it is a world of falsehood and strife.
When all things reattach to their divine source, even this world of lies and quarrels can host emes and shalom — the gift drawn down on Shabbos.
And Korach and his assembly, who did not desire peace, were swallowed into the depths (she'ol).
The same earth-mouth that exists to draw down completion became, for Korach's faction, the instrument of their downfall — because they refused the peace it represents.
And this completion that comes from above is given to Bnei Yisrael, and therefore [Knesses Yisrael] is called "HaShulamis" (the perfected/peaceful one) (Shir HaShirim 7:1).
Bnei Yisrael are the recipients of the heavenly perfection, so they bear the name "Shulamis," from the same root as shalom and shleimus — the people of peace and completeness.
For HaKadosh Baruch Hu makes peace in [the three dimensions of] olam (space), shanah (time), and nefesh (soul).
Using the framework of Sefer Yetzirah — world, year, and soul — the Sefas Emes shows that Hashem brings unifying peace to every realm of existence.
For in every place there are plantings unique to that place.
In the dimension of olam (space/place), each locale has its own distinct growth and character.
And Eretz Yisrael, through the power of the Bais Hamikdash, would produce all species, as it is written, "you will lack nothing in it" (Devarim 8:9).
Eretz Yisrael, energized by the Bais Hamikdash, is the place where all the world's diverse "plantings" are unified and made complete — the geographic point of peace.
And in time, each day [has its own quality], and the Shabbos makes peace.
In the dimension of shanah (time), the differing weekdays are harmonized by Shabbos, the day that unifies them.
And in souls, Bnei Yisrael receive the completion.
In the dimension of nefesh (soul), it is Bnei Yisrael who serve as the recipients and bearers of the unifying perfection.
And on Shabbos Kodesh all three gather together, as we say, "Who spreads the sukkah of peace over us and over Yerushalayim."
On Shabbos the three dimensions — Eretz Yisrael (place), Shabbos (time), and Bnei Yisrael (soul) — converge into one, which is why we bless Hashem as the One who spreads a canopy of peace over both the people and the holy city.
Summary: True peace is not the suppression of difference but the harmony drawn out of it. A machlokes for the sake of Heaven, like the "wars of Torah," ends in love, while Korach's selfish strife ends in destruction. Olam hazeh is by nature a world of falsehood and conflict that cannot complete itself; it must receive shleimus from Above. That gift of completion descends on Shabbos and is entrusted to Bnei Yisrael — uniting the three dimensions of place (Eretz Yisrael), time (Shabbos), and soul (Bnei Yisrael) into a single canopy of peace.
