Korach and the inner versus outer dimension
Korach · penimiyus · Shabbos · techeiles · Kohanim and Leviim
On the pasuk "And Korach took," "and he divided himself" — as is brought in the Zohar HaKadosh that he contested the "peace of Shabbos," which is the Name of the Holy One, blessed be He — see there.
The Zohar reads Korach's "taking" as a self-separation; his dispute struck at "shalom," the peace of Shabbos that is itself a Name of Hashem.
For it is brought that the holy Name is concealed and revealed, and so too the Torah and Yisrael.
Hashem's Name has both a hidden and a revealed dimension — and the same duality runs through the Torah and through Yisrael.
And this is the meaning of "the Name of the Holy One, blessed be He, is Shalom" — for all His works are in concealed and revealed, penimiyus (inwardness) and chitzoniyus (outwardness).
Hashem's Name "Shalom" (peace) means He unites the hidden and the open, the inner and outer dimensions of all His works into one harmonious whole.
And likewise among Bnei Yisrael there are tzaddikim who are revealed and there are those who are hidden.
The same concealed-and-revealed structure appears in the nation: some tzaddikim shine openly, others serve in hiddenness.
And certainly Korach and his assembly were great men, and they appeared, in the revealed dimension, as though they were greater than Aharon the Kohen.
Korach's faction were genuinely great, and on the visible, outward plane they even seemed to surpass Aharon.
But the power of penimiyus prevails, and this was the sign of Aharon's staff blossoming — that he has a portion in the hidden dimension.
The inner dimension is the stronger one, and the miraculous flowering of Aharon's staff proved that his greatness was rooted in the concealed, penimiyus realm.
And it is brought that the Kohanim guard from within and the Leviim from without, for so were the watches of the Leviim, and their power and their avodah were in the aspect of chitzoniyus, while the Kohen's was in penimiyus.
The division of duties reflects this: Leviim guarded the outer perimeter (the outward dimension), while Kohanim served within (the inner dimension).
And it is written, "the six working days it shall be closed, and on the day of Shabbos and the New Moon it shall be opened" — the gate of the inner courtyard (Yechezkel 46:1).
The gate to the inner courtyard stays shut through the workweek and opens only on Shabbos and Rosh Chodesh, when penimiyus becomes accessible.
Therefore Shabbos is called "Shalom," for in it there is a revelation of penimiyus.
Shabbos earns the name "Shalom" precisely because it is when the inner dimension is unveiled and unified with the outer.
And the working days are the portion of the revealed, and that is not "Shalom."
Weekdays operate on the outer, revealed plane alone, lacking the wholeness of Shabbos.
And likewise the Leviim belonged to the life of the working days; therefore, when the Aron journeyed, the Leviim would carry the Aron and the vessels of the Mishkan, for they are the men of war, the aspect of the working days.
The Leviim correspond to weekday-mode: it was they who carried the Aron and vessels while traveling — the active "men of war" laboring in the outer realm.
And Shabbos is a day of rest; when the Aron and the Mishkan were in their place, the Kohanim were primary.
In the Shabbos-mode of rest, when the Aron rested in its place, the Kohanim — the inner servants — took precedence.
Therefore Korach needed to nullify himself to Aharon, for the purpose of war is to arrive at rest.
As a Levi (the realm of struggle), Korach should have subordinated himself in bittul to Aharon, since all the labor of "war" exists only to reach the "rest" of penimiyus.
And one must nullify the working days to the Shabbos.
The outer, weekday avodah must be surrendered and directed toward the inner goal of Shabbos.
And Shabbos and the New Moon are two openings, the aspect of Moshe and Aharon, as is written elsewhere.
Shabbos and Rosh Chodesh are two distinct gateways into penimiyus, corresponding to Moshe and Aharon.
[And there is an allusion to what Chazal said, that he took a tallis that was entirely techeiles (blue).
The Sefas Emes now adds a bracketed allusion to Korach's challenge about an all-techeiles garment.
For it is brought that techeiles resembles, etc., the sky, and the sky resembles the Throne of Glory.
Chazal trace a chain: techeiles is like the sea, the sea like the sky, the sky like the Kisei HaKavod (Throne of Glory).
And the commentators are precise to ask: let it say briefly that it resembles the Throne of Glory.
The difficulty raised is why the Gemara lists the whole chain instead of simply stating that techeiles resembles the Throne of Glory.
But it is as above — that there are two levels.
The answer lies in the two-tiered structure of revealed and hidden already established.
It resembles [the sea and] the sky — the aspect of the revealed; but there is a hidden, inner level, that which resembles the Throne of Glory, and to this one can come only through the power of the thread of techeiles that Hashem commanded; and Korach was attaching himself only to the outer level, but that is not the essence, as written.]
The visible resemblance (sky) is the outer level, but the deeper resemblance to the Throne of Glory is reached only via the single commanded thread of techeiles — not a whole garment of it. Korach clung to the outward dimension alone, missing the true, inner point.
And in both Shabbos and the New Moon there is a revelation of the power of penimiyus; therefore it is written regarding Shabbos "Remember" (Zachor), and Rosh Chodesh is called a "day of remembrance," and we request "may there ascend and come... our remembrance."
Both Shabbos and Rosh Chodesh unveil penimiyus, which is why both are framed around "remembrance" — Zachor for Shabbos and Yaaleh V'Yavo's zikaron for Rosh Chodesh.
For "remembrance" is the penimiyus of the thing, like the azkarah (the memorial portion of the offering).
Zikaron denotes the inner essence of a thing — as the azkarah is the inner, essential portion of the korban that ascends to Hashem.
Summary: Hashem's Name is "Shalom" because He unites the concealed and the revealed, penimiyus and chitzoniyus, into one whole. Korach, a Levi belonging to the outer "weekday/war" realm, refused to nullify himself to Aharon, who embodied the inner "Shabbos/rest" realm — yet penimiyus always prevails, as the flowering staff proved. His all-techeiles claim grasped only the outward resemblance (sky) and missed the inner level (the Throne of Glory) reached solely through Hashem's commanded thread. Shabbos and Rosh Chodesh open the gate of penimiyus, which is why both center on "remembrance," the inner essence of all things.
