Uniting Torah with physical deed

Concerning the matter of the meraglim (spies), in brief.
The Sefas Emes introduces a short treatment of the sin of the spies.
For the generation of the wilderness was called the "generation of knowledge" — the generation that received the Torah, who were called "children of the Omnipresent." However, Eretz Yisrael is the aspect of avodah, where there is both deed and speech; and indeed it is written: "Man and beast You save, Hashem" (Tehillim 36:7), meaning that there should be a partnership of the two aspects, as Chazal said: "shrewd like Adam, yet making themselves like a beast."
The midbar generation lived a purely elevated, "knowing" existence, like children receiving Torah directly. But Eretz Yisrael demands avodah — combining the lofty "Adam" (mind and speech) with the lowly "beast" (physical deed). True service unites both.
Therefore, had the generation of the wilderness entered Eretz Yisrael, the completeness (shleimus) would have been as it should be.
Had the spiritually elevated midbar generation entered the Land, they would have achieved the perfect fusion of the lofty and the physical.
And this is the connection of the parsha of the nesachim (libations) right after the meraglim, based on the Gemara: "One who recites Krias Shema without tefillin is as though he brought an olah without a minchah, a zevach without nesachim."
The Torah places the laws of libations immediately after the episode of the spies. The Sefas Emes explains the link through the Gemara that treats Shema-without-tefillin as an incomplete offering.
For the essence of the korban is the aspect of "Adam," as in "When a man (adam) brings an offering" etc. (Vayikra 1:2).
The core of a korban is the "Adam" dimension — a person offering himself, the elevated inner aspect.
Only that Hakadosh Baruch Hu granted that the offering of an animal should stand in place of the soul of the man.
The animal is offered as a substitute for the person himself, who in truth ought to be giving over his own soul.
And the korbanos were given to Yisrael at the receiving of the Torah, as it is written: "which was done at Har Sinai" (Bamidbar 28:6) — and this is the aspect of "Adam."
The korbanos originate at Sinai and embody the "Adam," Torah-receiving, dimension of the midbar generation.
But the menachos (meal-offerings) and nesachim (libations) are rectifications to elevate the powers found in Eretz Yisrael — bread and wine.
The flour and wine of the libations come from the produce of the Land. They represent the work of uplifting the physical world — the "avodah" dimension of Eretz Yisrael.
And concerning the minchah Chazal said: "Whose way is it to bring such an offering? A poor man."
The humble meal-offering is the gift of the poor man — representing lowly, hands-on physical avodah rather than the lofty animal korban.
Therefore the aspect of the menachos and nesachim is the aspect of mitzvos performed through deed.
The meal-offerings and libations represent practical mitzvos — the physical "deed" half of avodah needed in Eretz Yisrael.
And similarly, with Krias Shema, which is the Torah, one must join to it the deed.
Shema is "Torah" — the lofty Adam dimension. But it must be paired with tefillin, the physical deed, just as the animal korban must be paired with libations.
And without this it is not sustained, as it says that he "bears false testimony" etc.
Accepting Hashem's sovereignty in Shema without backing it up with deed is like false testimony — the words are not made real.
And this was the sin of the meraglim, as above.
The spies wanted to remain in the purely spiritual existence of the midbar and refused the avodah of bringing Torah down into the physical reality of Eretz Yisrael. That refusal to unite the "Adam" with the "beast" was their sin.
Summary: The midbar generation lived a lofty, Torah-receiving existence ("Adam"/knowledge), but Eretz Yisrael demands avodah that fuses the elevated mind with physical deed ("beast"). Just as a korban requires its libations, and Shema requires tefillin, Torah must be wedded to action. The spies' sin was clinging to pure spirituality and refusing to bring it down into the deeds of the Land.
