The Ten Days reveal teshuvah's hidden gate

Regarding the matter of the Aseres Yemei Teshuvah (Ten Days of Repentance): as Chazal said, "In the place where baalei teshuvah (penitents) stand, even complete tzaddikim cannot stand," and therefore normally there are only the six days of work and Shabbos.

Throughout the year the week is built of six weekdays plus Shabbos. The baal teshuvah reaches a level even higher than the complete tzaddik, and this elevated dimension is what these special days reveal.

But now there are ten days, meaning that the illumination of the "three first ones," which are called "the days of old," becomes revealed.

The Ten Days of Teshuvah add a higher light beyond the normal seven — an illumination from a primordial, exalted source ("days of old") that is usually hidden.

And in truth, Shabbos too contains something of these "three first ones."

Shabbos already carries a taste of that same elevated light, which is why it is connected to the days of teshuvah.

This is the hint in the three seudos (meals) and the three times that "this day" is written regarding Shabbos — that the three first days shine within it.

The Torah says "today" three times in connection with Shabbos, and we eat three meals, corresponding to those three primordial days whose light radiates into Shabbos.

And these three are not revealed during the weekdays, as it is written: "the six working days it shall be closed" (Yechezkel 46:1).

This higher light is sealed off during the ordinary workdays; only Shabbos and these special days open the gate to it.

The reason is that during the weekdays there is admixture.

Weekday life is a mixture of good and bad, holiness blended with the material, which conceals the inner light.

And so it is written, "evening and morning."

Each day of creation has an "evening" — a dimension of darkness and concealment mixed in with the light of "morning."

But regarding Shabbos, which is a foretaste of the "days of old," no "evening" is written.

The Torah omits "evening" for the seventh day, signaling that Shabbos is free of that admixture of darkness — pure, unmixed light.

For this reason these are days of teshuvah, because there the contact of sins does not reach.

Because this elevated dimension is untouched by sin, it is precisely the realm in which teshuvah can take hold.

And this is the root of teshuvah — to return and cling to the Source, where sin causes no blemish.

True teshuvah means reattaching oneself to the inner root of the soul, a place so deep that sin never damaged it.

Therefore Shabbos always assists teshuvah.

Since Shabbos opens this untouched inner realm, it perpetually empowers a person's return to Hashem.

It is written about Shabbos that it is "a remembrance of the work of creation," and at first this is puzzling, for on the contrary, the entire work of creation is a preparation for Shabbos.

If Shabbos is the goal and creation merely leads up to it, why call Shabbos a "remembrance" of creation, as though creation were primary?

Rather, Shabbos is the "remembrance" — the penimiyus (inner essence) — of the work of creation.

Shabbos does not merely recall creation; it is the inner soul of all that was created, the unifying inner point of the whole creation.

This is better understood according to what Chazal said, that "Bereishis" is also one of the utterances of creation — namely that it is the one utterance through which the world could have been created, as stated in the fifth chapter of Avos.

Chazal teach that the world was made with ten utterances, yet it could have been made with one. That single utterance is the unifying "Bereishis" that contains everything.

For it is the Root in which everything is unified; only that it was created with ten in order that there be free choice, etc.

At the level of the single utterance all is one and undivided; the multiplicity of ten utterances introduces the separation that makes bechirah (free will) possible.

But Shabbos is "a remembrance of the work of creation" — meaning, of the totality of the deed, which is in unity, the "Reishis" mentioned above; understand this.

Shabbos recalls not the fragmented ten-utterance world but the unified whole, the single "Beginning" in which all creation is one.

Only that during these ten days the Holy One, Blessed is He, in His chesed, reveals within them the aspect of the "days of old."

Out of pure kindness, Hashem opens up this primordial unified light specifically during the Aseres Yemei Teshuvah.

Even though it cannot be revealed except through the revelation within them of the Yud-Gimmel Middos (Thirteen Attributes of Mercy), which are beyond the strict letter of the law, as it is written, "Who bears iniquity and passes over transgression" (Michah 7:18).

This exalted light can shine only when the Thirteen Attributes of Mercy are revealed — Hashem's conduct that reaches beyond strict justice, forgiving sin.

It is stated in the holy seforim that the holiness becomes revealed and breaks the iron partitions, and sins no longer obstruct it from being revealed, because He is abundant in chesed.

Sin normally erects "iron barriers" between us and Hashem, but the overflowing kindness of these days shatters those walls so the kedushah can shine through.

Therefore these days are the time to return before Him, may He be blessed, for ordinarily sins do not allow one to come to teshuvah; only because His chesed prevails in these days does He thereby extend a hand to transgressors to cling to teshuvah.

Sin itself blocks the path of return, but the surging divine kindness of these days reaches out to even the sinner and enables him to do teshuvah.

And it is stated [in the piyut], "And all believe that His hand is open."

The liturgy affirms our faith that Hashem's hand is always open to receive those who return.

And throughout the year we ask, "You open Your hand" (Tehillim 145:16).

All year long we plead for Hashem to open His hand and bestow His shefa (flow of blessing).

Only that it is the World of Teshuvah, and there the gate is open; only that the shefa must clothe itself in the world of action — and this is the meaning of "Your hand."

The supernal source of teshuvah is always open, but during the year that flow must descend and "dress itself" in physical reality — the "hand" that channels it down.

But during these days, the gate of teshuvah is revealed even within the world of action itself.

What is hidden the rest of the year becomes openly accessible now: the very gateway of teshuvah is revealed down here in our world of deed.

Summary: The Aseres Yemei Teshuvah add a higher illumination beyond the ordinary week — the unified, primordial "days of old" that Shabbos also tastes. Because this realm lies beyond the reach of sin, and because Hashem's overflowing chesed and the Thirteen Attributes of Mercy shatter the iron barriers that sin erects, the gate of teshuvah, normally hidden in the supernal source, becomes openly revealed in our own world of action.
