Teshuvah as fulfilling one's mission

"Take with you words…" (Hoshea 14:3) — for behold, the essence of teshuvah is to repair the shlichus (mission) for which a person was sent into this world.

The Sefas Emes teaches that real teshuvah is not merely regret over sins, but rectifying the very mission Hashem sent each person to accomplish in the world.

And it is written: "As the rain comes down… and does not return there until it has watered [the earth]… so shall My word be…" (Yeshayahu 55:10–11), the entire verse.

Just as rain does not return to heaven until it has accomplished its purpose on earth, so too the Divine "word" must achieve its task before returning to its source.

And the Holy One placed in every Jew "words" (devarim) that he must bring forth into the world from potential into actuality, to produce fruits with them — and then he will return, having fulfilled his mission, before Him, may He be blessed.

Every Jew is entrusted with a portion of Divine "words" — his unique task — which he must actualize and make fruitful; only then can his soul return upward having completed its shlichus.

This is the Divine soul, as Chazal said: "The neshamah within the body is like the Names of Hashem (azkaros) upon the parchment," and as it is written: "And I have placed My words in your mouth" (Yeshayahu 51:16).

The neshamah is itself a Divine "word" within a person — as holy within the body as Hashem's Names written on a Torah scroll — and Hashem has placed these holy words in our mouths to bring them to fruition.

And the neshamah must repair the deeds and the body, as it is written: "until it has watered… the earth and made it bring forth [and sprout]…" (Yeshayahu 55:10).

Like rain that soaks the earth and makes it fertile, the soul's task is to refine the body and a person's actions, causing them to "sprout" with holiness.

And then the spirit will return to Him, may He be blessed.

Once the soul has accomplished this refinement of the body and deeds, it can return to its Divine source fulfilled.

Therefore Shabbos is especially suited to teshuvah, for on Shabbos there is an elevation of all the deeds of the weekdays — it is a foretaste of "the day that is entirely Shabbos," when all the "words" will return to Him.

Shabbos lifts up the work of the week to its root, mirroring the ultimate "day that is entirely Shabbos"; this very quality of elevation makes it the ideal time for teshuvah.

And when a person sins, the neshamah cannot ascend, as it is written: "it shall not return… empty…" (cf. Yeshayahu 55:11).

Sin prevents the soul from rising back to its source, for it cannot return "empty," without having accomplished its mission.

But for the baal teshuvah, Hashem assists so that the "words" will produce fruits.

One who sincerely returns receives Divine help, enabling his entrusted "words" to finally bear the fruits they were meant to bear.

And this is the meaning of "I will be like dew… he shall strike his roots like the Levanon, his shoots shall spread out…" (Hoshea 14:6–7), throughout the haftarah.

The haftarah of Shabbos Shuvah depicts the baal teshuvah flourishing like a watered tree — striking deep roots and sending forth shoots — once Hashem's "dew" enables his mission to take root and grow.

The intent is that he will be able to bring [his portion] from potential into actuality, so that the "words" will repair the entire body, to blossom and sprout and produce fruits, as above.

The whole purpose of teshuvah is to actualize the soul's mission so that the holy "words" refine the entire body and bring forth their intended fruits.

Summary: The Sefas Emes teaches that the essence of teshuvah is to repair the shlichus — the mission — for which a person was sent into this world. Like rain that does not return to heaven until it has watered the earth, the Divine "words" Hashem placed in every Jew (his very neshamah, as holy as Hashem's Names on parchment) must be actualized and made fruitful before the soul can return to its source. Sin prevents this ascent, leaving the soul unable to return "empty"; but for the baal teshuvah, Hashem assists so that these words bear fruit. Shabbos, which elevates all the week's deeds and foreshadows "the day that is entirely Shabbos," is therefore uniquely suited to this work of return.
